Of moving interest to all business
men of the ceuntry, whether they
are owners of a general merchandise
business in a remote hamlet or the
manager of a metropolitan depart
ment store, is the use of the war
tax stamp and the special lax stamp.
The war tax, of which the stamp
is the certificate of payments, is in
reality an emergency tax to meet a
deficiency im the income of the
United States government. The pre
sent war in Europe has caused a de
crease in the nation's imports.
There is a corresponding shrinkage
in the governmont's tariff and im
port duties tha! must be met. The
present war tax imposed therefor
commenced December Ist, 1914 and
expires by limitation December, 31,
1915.
The special tax is an annual tax
at fixed rates and is similar to a
city or state license.
The part that will be of the most
interest to the readers of the Mari
etta Journal follows:
Schedule A—Documentary
Bonds, debentures or certificates of
indebtedness of any association, com
pany or corporation, on eachsloo of
face value or fraction thercof, !

On each original issue of certifi
cates of stock, whether on organi
zation or reorganization, on each

On all sales, agreements to sell,

Upon each gale agreement to sell
or gareement of sale of any products
or merchandiee at any exchange or
board of trade, or other similar place
either for present or futue delivery,
for each $lO9 in value of said sale,
1 cent.
And for each §sloo or fractional
part thereof in cxcess of $lOO, 1 cent
Promissory notes, and for each re
newal, for a sum not exceeding $lOO
2 cents.
For each additional $lOO or fraz
tion thereof, 2 cents.
Bills of lading, manifests, ete, is
sued by express companies or publie
carriers etec, 1 cent.
Bonds, except those required in
legal proceedings, 50 cents.
Certificates of profits or certifi
cates of memoranda showing interest
in the property or accumulations of
any association, company or corpora
tion and al!l iransfers thereof, on
each $lOO of face value or fraction
thereof, 2 cents.
Certificates of damage or other
wise and all other certificates or
documents issued by port warden or
marine surveyor, 25 cents.
Certificates of any description re
quired by law, not otherwise speci
fied, 10 cents.
Contract brokers' note, or memos:-
andum of sale of goods, or merchan
dise, stocks, bonds, exchange notes
of hand, real estate or property of
any kind, issucd by brokers, etec.,
for each note cr memorandum of
sale, not otherwise provided for ia
act, 10 cents.
Conveyance: Deed, instrument or
writing conveying lands, tenements
or other realty, etc, value over $lOO
‘and not exceeding $5OO, 50 cents.
For each additional $5OO or frac
tion thereof, 50 cents.
Entry of goods, wares or merchan
dise in customhouse lot exceeding
$lOO in value, 25 cents.

horn arrives for the fire truck from
the Velie Motor Vehicle Co., that the
note due them be paid for the fire
truck, and that the Clerk be author
ized to pay same when the horn is
received and approved. Motion car

Council adjourned, subject to the
call of the Mayor.

Motion made by Councilman N.
M. Mayes, and seconded by Council
man J. R. Brumby, Jr., that it ap
pearing that an election was held by
an order of the Mayor, on November
ird, 1914, for the purpose of elect
ing a Councilman from the Second
Ward, to fill the unexpired term of
I'. J. Grogan, he having resigned,
and that P. W. Camp, without oppo
sition, received one hundred and six
ty-four votes, that said P. W. Camp‘
be declared the duyl elected Council
man from the Second Ward, to fill
the unexpired term of T. J. Grogan.
Motion carried.
On motion made by Councilman J.
P. Groover and seconded by Council-
W. M. Kemp, the Council adjourned
subject to the call of the Mayor.
