MARIETTA AND CANTON END
SERIES WITH HONORS EVEN.
Marietta ahd Canton played 'three
of the best games of amateur baseball
ever pulled off last week but with
out decisive resuit,
Each town hired all the players
they could get and filled in with two
or three of tieir own men so if you
did not see thr games there is nos
much to interest you to write about.
The first game was Mariettas by
a score of 4 to 1. The second went
to Canton on the Canton grounds by
a scorc of 7 to 4 and the third play
ed in Marietta last Saturday balanced
the scales at 3to 3. Also it balanc
ed the games three love and some
to play if they can ever get togzether
on a place to play. Canton won't
come to Marietta and the local boys
won’'t go up there.
THE MERGENTHALER AND ME.
That complicated machine, known
as the linotype, which flashes metal
letters in rows as the ice cream ads
appear on the sereen at the Gem, is
an uncompromising and heartless
monster. Every reader of daily pa
pers knows its’ “tricks and manners’
and its scandalous mis-statements.
The inventors of the uncanny wreteh
were mostly Dutchmen whose lan
guage is said to sound more like the
hissing of geese than words. So the
linotype delights in making the let
ter s and sticks it on to all kinds of
words where it does not belong.
To be sure the operator can cut
off those superflous letters for a
weelkly paper but, when it comes to a
daily there is ng, time to do it. This
explains why the Atlanta Sunday
Journal published the misleading
item saying Mrs. L. N. Trammel took
the role of Powhatan and Mrs. Tho
mas Hemp that of John Rolfe. To
be sure it was written that the opera
Powhatan was given by the U. D. C.
but every one in town knows the
ladies did not need to impersonate
Indian chiefs and English adventur
ers. lancy a graceful, dainty little
blonde like Mrs. Trammel ‘rying to
be a big Injun -:w?iflj:': eagle feathers
around, her Madonna brows and a
red striped blanket falling from her
girlish shoulders| - ;
Mrs. Hemp is almost as delicate in
her form and has beautiful grey eyes
and fluffy dark hair. She never
could have walked in even the smal
lest of top-boots and as for skipping
in tune.to a song or stomping a
round-—it simply could not have beail
done. My dear sisters, we have
been made absurd by the Mergen
thaler's weakne's for SSBS.
Mr. L. N. Trammell, who is cap
able of heroic roles, made a superb
Powhatan and Mr. Hemp was a Rolfe
whose boots could take him and
Pocahontas into “that new world,
whieh is the old” even into Love’'s
Paradise.

A TRIP TO POWDER SPRINGS.
Mr. and Mrs. Wayland Camp went
to Powder Springs Sunday in their
big new car and took Mrs. W. J,
Manning, Miss Sarah Manning and
Mrs. Carter with them. Visits were
made to Mr. and Mrs. J. F. P. Lind
ley and to Mrs. Margaret Lindley
who has her daughter, Mrs. R. A,
Smith,of Thomaston, on a visit with
her sweet little daughter Martha,
The fine water of Powder Springs
attracts parties to picnic there and
many passing automobiles stop for
cool drinks. Although this is such
a small town most of the residents
have plenty of neighbors becauss
there is one long street and houses
are mnear together. It is a very old
town and most of its citizens are de
scendants of early settlers. There
are two cemecteries, one near the rail-!
road and one quite a mile away at
the other end of the town.
Wild flowers are not as plentiful
now as they have been but there are
many yellow blossoms teossing in the
breezes and may pop vines are full
of their unique flowers. A rain was
evidently coming up although tne
setting sun hung like a globe of fire
above the trees beyond the hill on
which so many are taking their last
long sleep. As the lightningz flash
-2d and the rain began to fall we
thought of old Uncle Remus and his
true saying: ,
“De drizzle dat sets de tater slip
right Is de makin er de may-pop,
vine.”
