- RATIONAL CEMETERY
10 SR ‘
The Superintendent of th: Na
tiopal Cemetery noticed that quite
a number of the largest oaks, and
a number of elms were dying in the
Cemetery. The oaks have been
dying more or less for several years,
and the superinteandent was unable
to determine the cause.
As to the elms, it was plain to
see that it was some kind of worm
that was destroying them. So he
wrote to the Bureau of Forestry,
Washington, D. C., who sent an ex
pert Entomologist, Mr. F. C. Craig
head, specialist in forest entomolo
gy, to make an investigation &and
report. Captain Wilson teiis us
that as soon as he recéives the re
port, with thbe consent of his de
partment, he will make such of the
report as may be of benefit to the
public, public.
Captain Wilson also requested the
uartermasters Department to send
an expert to assist him in locating
a public-comfort building, to be lo
cated in the most convenient place,
for all concerned. As there are to
be both a new lodge, (Superinten
dent’'s Residence) and other new
outbuildings, he was somewhat un
certain which was the correct place
for the public-comfort as he was not
informed just where the new lodge
and stable and tocl room would be
located, Washington sent an ex
pert in that line, Mr. E. H. Mitchell,
of Washington, D. C. .
Captain Wilson and Mrs. Wilson
are both delighted with the loca
tions of all the new buildings, (to
be) as from the information given
by the expert, all things work to
gether for the betterment of con
ditions of the cemetery, the Super
intendent and his family.
This new building will be erect
ed during this month, and the new
lodge, tool-room and stable not un
til next year.

TO THE CORN CLUB BOYS
It is only a few days now until
the Southeastern Fair in Atlanta. I
want every member of the Boys’
Corn Club in Cobb County to attend
this fair on Wednesday Oct. 18th.
All the boys from the northern
part of the county will go over the
W. & A., leaving Marietta at 9:37
a. m., and those from the southern
part of the county will go over the
Southern, leaving Powder Springs
at 8:26. Then, all the boys will
meet at the Capitol at 10:45 and
go in a body to the fair grounds. If
any prefer going on the electric car
or automobile they can do so and
meet us at the ecapitol at the time
mentioned- above.
All the boys who wish to stay
over until Thursday afternoon can
do so for homes are already provided
in« Atlanta.
Boys, begin now to make your
plans to go, and let's carry a dele
gation from Cobb that will make
other counties of the state sit up
and take note.
The Southeastern Fair will not
make its awards until we hold our
county contest which will be some
time in November—after all the
boys have had time to gather their
corn. Sometime before our county
contest in November I want a ten
ear exhibit and the record book
from each member of the club. If
each boy will send in his record
we can get the fifty dollars for the
best corn club in the State. Now,
get your records up in good shape
and let's get it. :
If you can go to the fair on Wed
nesday, please write me at the
earliest date possible and tell me
what place you will leave from. I
shall go with the boys from Mari
etta and we will all' meet at the
capitol at 10:45 a. m.

THE MARIETTA JOURNAL AND COURIER
The record cof the Marietta Fire
Department this year has been most
remarkable. The new ‘automobile
engine of course is a big help but
the quick response of the members
of this volunteer organization has
resulted in ten of the eighteen fires
being extinguished with the chem
icals carried on the wagon before
the hose was connected up. On the
other eight fires only 65,000 gallons
of water have been used which
would cost at regular commercial
rates only $6.50. The damage to
buildings and contents has been held
down to less than §2,500.
This company, which has about
thirty members, is headed by Col.
Gordon Gann as President with Geo.
Northcutt as Secretary and “Bob’
Hicks as chief. They meet the see
ond Friday night in each month and
instead of drawing pay for their ser
vices they pay regular dues to de
fray incidental expenses.
We are glad to know this depart
ment will soon be in nice quarters
as they have been running under
very unpleasant surroundings for
some time past. They have had the
old steam engine put in fine shape
and have a new suction hose for it
which they can attach to any fire
plug in Marietta. When they get in
the rear of the auditorium building
they will be in fine quarters.
