j - A Series Of “BUY IN MARIETTA” E ditorials—--Number 17 !
| By J2B. coX. e |
(of The Marietta Cigar Factory) |
An effort has recently been made to have the Uuited States
Government stand sponsor for the newest scheme “for bringing |
the producer and consumer into direct business relations.”
Bills have been introduced both in the Senate and the House
- of Representives to create a National Chamber of Agriculture.
It seems now to appear that this is merely a gigantic scheme of
the bigger mail order houses to further their interests.
The formulator of the plan to have Uncle Sam promote the
~ direct-order trade” is a man of wide note, who, it has been learn
ed, is backed by a former president of one of the big mail order
houses. | e |
A certain U. S. Senator is also “in on the scheme” and has"
allowed the mailing under his franking privilege of a large
edition of a document entitled “Direct Dealing Between Produc
er and Consumer.” It is said that more than a million of these
pamphlets have been mailed under this Senator’s franking priv
ilege. Also that they were printed at the expense of the mail
order houses. |
The pamphlet is a direct appeal of the mail order houses,
and it is made to appear that the U. S. Government is back of
the scheme. | il |
The above shows clearly to just what lengths these mail
otder dealers will go to entice trade that rightfully belong to the
local merchants. !
Are we, as loyal Americans, going to help in the destruction
of our local business interests by patronizing these “Vultures of
BUSINESS.” | '
Or, will we, each one of us, resolve that not one penny goes
from our city to swell the coffers of these unscrupulous, out-of
town concerns, who have no other interest in us than to get our ‘
money. -
