past three years has been in Oxford
England having obtained one of the
Rhodes Scholarships to the Oxford
University, and finished the course,
returned home last Friday night.

soon be on the road to recovery.

The silver tea given by the Junior
League of the Red Cross’on last Sat
urday afternoon, was one of the
‘most successful entertainments that
they have given. Everybody seemed
anxious to- help in this cause, con
tributions from ten cents to ten dol
lars were received, something over
fifty two dollars was realized by
them. Austell can boast of her wil
ling workers and contributors in
a cause like this. - ;
Mr. and Mrs. Harris Fitzpatrick
spent the week-end with relatives in
Moreland, Ga.'
Miss Mary Kate Cureton svent the
week-end as the guest of Misg Mary

There is some of the finest crops
right through here of any section of
the country. Hay is short, but the
corn and cotton make up for it, even
some of our neighbors are hauling
watermelons to town. We haven't
learned where the patch is, although:
they say somebody has already found l

| Warren Lindley’s, mule ran away
|with him Sunday. Warren was
’thrown down but held on to the
{lines. He was slightly bruised and
this clothes torn. Mrs. Warren, in
‘juinping out of the buggy, was run
| over, received several bruises but no
lbones were broken. The buggy was
not hurt.
‘ Last Friday morning while Miss
}Melissa Scott was milking, the cow
'became unruly aand ran over her,
'knocked her down and fracturing the
bone at the hip joint. Dr. J. D. Mid
’dlebrooks was called, after examina
tion it was thought advisable to car
‘ry her to Dr. Nolan’s sanitarium.
She was carried immediately and at
present is doing very well. Her
friends hope she will soon be able
to walk again. .
Mr. G, A. McElvaney, with four
other members of his family from
Corsicanna, Texas, motored the dis
tance of 985 miles to visit his sister,
Mrs. A. W. Kemp, and other relatives
whom he had not seen in seventeen
years. They made the trip without
any trouble, not even a puncture.
They visited relatives in Fulton,
Gwinnett and Walton counties. Ac
companied by Miss Carlie Kemp,
they returned to Mr. Kemp’s Sun
day, had a reunion where forty rela
tives met and enjoyed the day to
‘gether. ‘

It was Roy Nickson instead of
Nelson, as appeared in my items last
week, who has gone to France.
Dr. Sam Moon and wife, of Por
tal, Ga., are visiting relatives here.
It has been too dry for grass and
weed seed to germinate but since
the recent rains the ground is liter
ally covered with weggls and grass.
It will be nectesary to plow the crops
again or else it will be injured by
weeds and grass.
The folks that do the loudest talk
ing and swell with patriotism gener-‘
ally do the least . fighting. |

Mrs. Sallie Wardlaw tells a grues
some story about her experience with
a snake. She went to a hen’s nest
after dark and reached for the eges
and caught hold of a huge chicken
snake. She turned it loose of course
and raised a mighty alarm. F, G.
Wardlaw was soon on the spot with
a shot gun and killed the rogue,
Aunt Sallie affirms her hair has been
turning gray since.

Mr. Grady Wilkie did a brave act
here Wednesday as No. 2 passenger
train came in on the main line, there
was a lady standing too near the
track and Mr. Wilkie jerked her off
just in time to avert probably a terri
ble accident,. .
Mrs. W. O. Roberts, Mrs. Will
Baldwin, Miss Lucy and Carrie Gat
lin and Mrs. H. M. Gatlin, went to
Acworth Wednesday to attend the
District Ladies Missionary Society.
Mrs. Alice Scroggs spent Wednes
day in Marietta.
Mrs. A. Thompson and Mrs. Sue
Furgerson have both had falls re
cently and were painfully hurt. We
are glad to know that both of these
estimable women are much better.
