CAPT. HEIDT WRITES
TO MEN OF GEORGIA
The writer as a native Georgian
wiches to inform the men of Geor
gia through the press of the State,
4 to the military situation as it
ctands today with respect to them.
1. The President has authority to
call for men in separate lots or in
.rements of 500,000 at a time and as
many increments as he may deem
jecessary to prosecute the war.
2. So far the announced program
of the government is to call for two
increments. |
3. The first increment has already
veen drafted and is now reporting
for duty. It consisted of 18,337
Georgia men, and giving credits for
the number of nren whe velunteered
since April Ist, this number was re
duced te where there was enly ap
proximately 12,000 men, drafted to
complete tire lst imerement from
Georgia. '
i The second inerement of 509,
pOO men will seon be called and ion-l
clditien te that number an addi
sieval 150,600 men te fill up t’hte‘xi
National Guard, mew below war
strength, and 50,000 men to repfiasee‘
ihe 10% of the Ist imerement, whe
ailed to pass the Surgeon's examin
siion on account of physical disabili
ty, or the second ineremenmt will be
ahout 700,000 men.
5. Since the population of Georgia
is sbout 1-40th that of the United
states, Georgia must furnish 1-40th
of the increment of 700,000 or 17,-
500 men, but about 3,000 men have
volunteered in Georgia since June
30th, for which Georgia will receive
credit which leaves the State to fur
nish about 14,500 men on the second
increment against about 11,500 men
drafted on the first inerement, or
257 more men will be called by each
bosrd on the second call to furmish
the second increment.
5. It is highly desirable on the
part of the government to secure
these men at the earliest moment
practicable in order to train them.
Hence, this call will come just as
soon as the government can accomo
date the men which it is believed will
be almost immediately.
7. The ruling of the War Depart
ment is that the posting of a man’s
name as being ordered up for physi
¢al examination by his local board
deprives him of the privilege of volun
teering.
R. In view of the above facts any
man who wishes to become a volun
teer and choose his branch of ser
vice, should aet at omnce or he may
be too late. All branches of the ser
vice are now open to choice of the
applicant, namely, Infantry, Caval
ry, Artillery, Medical Department,
Quartermaster Department, Engineer
Remount Service (at Camp Gordon
and Camp Wheeler Depots). In faect,
any branch a mian wamnts he ecan
(hoose now,
9. Georgians should wnot neglect
this opportunity as this may be the
last opportumity for the registered
man to volamteer. :
10. The pay of a soldier is from
$30.00 to $599.00 per month, elear
money. The government furnishes
all the necessities of life, which at the
present high cost of living, eompares
favorably with $75 to $9O salaries
outside the army. Married men may
be accepted in many branches of the
cervice and arrangements have been
made whereby all or a part of a sol
dier's pay may be paid by the governe
ment directly to his family.
11. Colored miem are now being
enlisted for service in stevedore Regi
meuts. Same pay, same orgamiza
tion, but separate Regiment for
waite and colored. Never before in
the history of the country have such
attractive opportunities as these been
afforded the colored race.
12. For fhrther information, see
Your postmaster for direction to
Near recruiting officer.
Very respectfully,
G. V. HEIDT,
Captain Infantry, R. O.
