SEVENTH DISTRICT
HIGH SCHOOL MEET
One of the greatest events of the
school year, and one to which we are
all looking forward, is the annual
District Meet which is to be held this
year in Marietta, on the twelfth and
thirteenth of April. There is no
greater incentive to class and ath
letic work than the chance of rep
resenting Rome High at this meet.
The greatest rivalry is aroused year
ly and muth hard work is done by
every contestant in the preliminaries.
When the lucky ones are chosen all
personal hopes and feeling are put
aside and the contestant is sent- to
the meet with the whole school be
that he must win, and as a uswal
thing he does, as witness our cups,
hind him. Consequently he feels‘
past and present.
. The stated object of these meets is|
the holding of various contests, but
3 addition to this the meet brings|
the schools into closer relationship, |
helps school progress and furnishesi
a time of pleasure and excitement
for all participants and spectators.
The contests themselves consist of
spelling, essay, declamation, music,
recitation and athletic events, in ad
dition to exhibitions of the various
departments of the assembled schools.
The athletic contest occdsions the
greatest excitement and interest and
is usually the most hotly contested.
A cup is awarded to the team mak
ing the greatest number of points.‘
The literary events, while not so ex-|
citing, are certainly as important as|
the athletic contests. The winning‘
literary team is also awarded a cup,
?nd winners of first prizes in the
various contests are presented with
individual medals.
The lists for the preliminaries,
which are to be held soon, are rapid
ly filling up, the entrants in athle
tics are practicing daily, and the ex
hibits are being prepared and, in
fact everything is being prepared for
the meet. While we have fine can
didates for each contest, yet no one
can do so well alone as he can when
he has the crowd behind him. We
shall certainly have the school with
us in spirit in Marietta, but actual
presence of all the students possible
will greatly increase our chance of
victory. There will be no school on
the days of the meet and all who can
are urged to go to Marietta -and root. |
Our object is to bring our literary
cup won last year, and to bring the
atheletic cup, now held by Carters
ville, in addition. It depends on the
spirit of the contestants and that
depends on the enccuragement of |
your presence. Therefore, let'’s alll
go to Marietta prepared to uige our |
school to victory.-—The Roman of
the Rome High School.

;Acwon'm GIVES LOT FOR
, DEMONSTRATION GARDEN
Acworth is to have a demonstra
tion garden. Some days ago when
the Home Economics Agent, Mrs.
Sawyer, was over there she express
ed a wish for such a garden, and up
on her return te Marietta, she re
ceived the letter below, which glows
with fine spirit of progress.
“Mrs. D. E. Sawyer, Home Econo
' mics Agent, Marietta, Ga.
,“Dear Mrs. Sawyer:
; “All preliminaries have been ar
'ranged here for that demonstration
garden, and many of us are enthusi
aiste over the idea of having it here
and the outlook for its success. Mr.
Smith, whom I spoke of to you, is
Ivery much interested indeed and will
do everything in his power to make
it a success. He is an experienced
gardener, but is anxious to openatel
the garden exactly as instructed by
;you. We have secured a splendidl
plat, right in town, just opposite the
railway station, and we think jpst the
right size and slope. The local oil
'mill and fertilizer works have re
quested that they be allowed to fur
‘nish all the fertilizer needed. I feel
sure the local merchants will be more
than glad to furnish the seed. Wel
can get all the other co-operation!
wished for from the citizens in gen
eral.
“Mr. Smith is anxious to see you
just as soon as possible before pro
ceeding, as of course, you both wish|
a thorough understanding in regard
to all phases of the matter. I
We are ready and anxious to dol
our part, and surely appreciate your
designating Acworth for your demon
stration garden. We realize what a
great benefit this will mean to our
community. g
“With very kindest regards to your
self and Dr. Sawyer, I remain,
“Yours very truly,
E W, RAY.”
In this connection, but without the
permission of Mrs. Sawyer, we wish
to remind our people that no progress
has yet been made toward getting
such a garden in Marietta.
Personally, we know that the mat
ter has been held up for the lack of
the proffer of suitable lot in town,
while we feel sure that there are
many such lots that will not be other
wise cultivated or made use of in
any way this year.
