J .D. Watson, son Thoias E. Wat
son, died this week in Florida. Only
a few months ago Mr. Watson lost
his only daughter, and in this second
bereavement he has the sympathy
of the whole south, regardless of for
mer political differences.
And another human pest too fre
quently encountered is the one who
faces both ways on the war. When
he is with a patriotic, decent man
he is for the president and his war
policies, and when he strikes a kicker
and a knocker who hammers the
‘government and Wilson he joins him,
‘and in doing so appears in his true

National Debts.
Money is needed to support our armed forces in the
field and on the high seas. Everybody knows that. Sums
that stagger the imagination are needed—sums so vast
that the mind is incapable of grasping the idea of wealth
involved,
But do you ever stop to think that the price you are
paying is little compared with what others are paying?
Do you know that Great Britain’s national debt is $24,-
000,000,000—26.6 per cent of her $90,000,000,000 of na
tional wealth? Germany has a national debt of $26,000,-
000,000—32.5 per cent of her $80,000,000,000 of national
wealth, and Russia’s percentage is the same, her national
debt being $13,000,000,000 and national wealth $40,000,-
000,000. .
’ ~ Austria-Hungary you might call a bankrupt nation,
with a national wealth of $25,000,000,000 and a nationgl
debt of $15,000,000,000—60 per cent! France has na
tional wealth of $65,000,000,000 and a debt of $20,000,-
000,000—30.7 per cent, and Italy a wealth of $20,000,-
000,000 and $5,000,000,000 debt—2s.s per cent.
‘ Compared with these figures, the United States na
tional debt is gratifyingly small—4.4 per cent. We
have national wealth of $250,000,000,000 and a national
debt of $11,000,000,000.
The above from the Atlanta Georgian shows as
clearly as it can be written just why Germany is fighting
on and rolling up an enormous debt.
She is promising her people that we shall pay her
debts. The spoils she takes from others is her incentive
to keep in the field. The same motive that actuates train
robbers or bank robbers, who know the danger and ex
pense of preparation and execution of the robbery, but
who are willing to take the chances in order to get the
wealth of same one else. :
America has been the apple in the eye of the Kaiser
and his noble friends from the start. First they must
master Europe and turn its ships and guns and armament
upon us. No doubt he says daily to his noble friends and
followers, “Look, yonder is America, overflowing with
wealth, already occupied by thousands of my faithful
spies, who will actively assist us when the hour comes, to
take whatever we desire. It is defended only by poor
heasts, who are willing to await our coming to slaughter
them, and to make slaves of their wives and daughters.”
Americans, will you await the coming of this enemy
of civilization, this partner of thq vile Turk, who made
slaughter of the Armenians, or will you arise as one man
and keep the carnage on the other side of the ocean?
‘ This is no time to dispute among ourselves as to who
is doing the most, or the best, for our cause, but it is the
time for every one to get together and do all we can, with
a united front to the common foe of liberty and humanity.
Your debt to your nation is only to measured by every
thing you have, even to your life, if necessary. :
Even as Rome rose and fell, so America will fall be
fore this monster, if we do not send men, and munitions,
and food, to assist our bleeding brothers in France.
Again we say it, if we do not do this, we are not
worthy of life and liberty and wealth, nor shall we be
able to keep them. A year of war should wake you up
to our needs. This is the hour and you are the man.
District Young People.
The coming of the Seventh District High School
Meet to Marietta this week is an event of unusual impor
tance to our town.
From each town in the district come members of the
school faculty accompanied by a number of the brightest
young people of their respective communities.
These young people are the future men and women
of affairs in our section. Soon they will be the leaders
in business and society, having in their own hands the
shaping of the destinies of our land. |
We can not view too seriously now the shaping of the
characters and minds of these boys and girls who so quick
ly must assume all the cares and responsibilities of man
hood and womanhood.
Impressions made upon the young are often the most
lasting. Small matters in the mind of a man, may take
on huge proportions in the sight of a boy, and don't for
tget, boys make men.
| W e bespeak also for our town a good impression upon
our young visitors. The spirit of rivalry which exists be
‘tween the young people of the various schools, should be
]free from all bitterness, and the acquaintance and friend
ships formed during this meeting should be the beginning
'of many that shall last through life.
l It is pleasant to be the winner in any contest, but even
'as great is the ability to do your best, and then to accept
'defeat gracefully if you must.
i To the young people we wish to extend a most cordial
‘oreeting to our town. The latch-string hangs on the out
-Iside, and the keys are yours. We feel sure that the more
'you see of Marietta, the better it will be for Marietta and
!for you.

THE SENATORSHIP.
Strong pressure"is being brought to
bear on Governor Dorsey to get him
to enter the race against Hardwick,
and so insistent is the demand for
him, that he can not longer refuse
The friends of Mr .Harris have
for months stood guard over his can
didacy, demanding that the people
“holler for Harris” or be branded as
traitors, and claiming that the race
is all over already, and Mr. Harris
as good as eiccted.
So far as we have been able to
observe, the people are not for Har
ris, and can not be made to accept
him against their will. Nearly every
man admits that Dorsey can beat the
field, and that he only has to an
nounce his permission of the use of
his name to put all the rest out of
the race.
Now and then we hear a rumor
that Governor Dorsey is under a
promise to support Harris, and that
will keep him out of the race, but the
office belongs to the people of the
state, and they will vote for Dorsey
not Harris.
OUR HAT IS OFF TO CARTERS
VILLE.
We thought we were doing a big
thing in Marietta when we pulled off
that War Savings Stamp drive here
recently, but it seems that we were
just showing other towns how to do
it.
We patted ourselves on the back,
and felt real patriotic about it at
the time, but now here comes Carters
ville with a day’s drive which netted
$52,380. The only possible credit
we may assume, is that they used our
system of organization. A few days
after the drive here Ralph Northcutt
who was Capt. of our Reds made a
trip to Cartersville and while there
told them of our system.
They had a Blue and a Red army
just as our own, Paul A. Aiken being
Captain of the Blues and Harry
Scope Captain of the Reds. The
Blues were winners by a small mar
gin. All honor to both of them.
EVERY AMERICAN’S DUTY.
To work, economize, and lend mon
ey to the Government is the duty of
every American.
Hundreds of thousands of our men
have been called to arms and taken
away from the productive forces of
the country.
Hundreds of thousands of others
have been diverted from producing
things used in peace to producing
things used in war. -
In the face of this lessened pro
ductive force and production a great
and unusual drain upon our resources
is made by our Army and Navy and
our allies
Work and speed-up production to
make up for the lessened production;
economize in consurfiption to lessen
as much as possible the drain upon
our resources; lend your money to
your Government to prosecute this
war successfully and make our sol
diers powerful, effective, and victori
ous
Every American can do an indi
vidual service to his country by work
ing, and buying Liberty Bonds
THIRD LIBERTY LOAN BUTTON.
The button which will be given to
every subscriber to a Liberty Loan
Bond of the third issue, whether of a
$5O bond or a $lO,OOO one, will have
a border of brilliant red, and a blue
field with a liberty bell, and the
words “Third Liberty Loan” in
white.
Sixteen million of these buttons are
now ready for delivery and will be
given out when the subscriptions are
made.
THE ENEMY OF LIBERTY
The Kaiser is coming to Cobb
County very soon, but it will never
be any other way than in the movies
we hope. At that, we notice in to
day’s dispatches where a western
man became so enraged and excited
at the film character, that he took a
couple of shots at the screen before
he could be stopped. ¢
The Strand Theatre has arranged
to get the famous film “The Kaiser,
the Beast of Berlin’’ which has been
creating so much excitement in the
east.
This film characterization of the
greatest murderer on earth may
serve to bring home to us more truly,
the ambitions and purposes of this
fiend, and his associates.
It is being run now in Atlanta for
the first time .south and Mr. March
man will be able to anncunce the
date for Marietta in a few days.
A national school poster competi
tion has been put under way by the
National War Savings Committee.
Prizes of war-savings stamps are to
be awarded for the best posters deal
ing with war savings stamps and cer
tificates, designed by pupils of pub
lic schools and art schools. The con
test will close May 15.
