Governor Dorsey is interested in vou, and you should show your appreciation by your presence and approval. Reports Show There Is In Sight About A Barrel To Each Family. Almost 2000 families reported to me the amount of flour on hand and the work of tabulating these reports and summing them up has taken no little work. Reports vary in amount from ‘“‘enough for breakfast tomor row’’ to “20 48-lb. sacks” The aver age of the large number of reports is approximately a barrel per family already in the homes of people with 2500 barrels in the stores of the county. This indicates to me that Cobb county people use good judgment in laying in supplies in winter for crop season: that Cobb county people are “good livers.” that we may live for some time without shipping more flour from the mills to Georgia: that our people are patriotic and willing always to give facts about the true condition of things and that we are better off on the bread question than many people thought we were. The object of the government in asking for the report was to obtain first-hand information about the real eondition so as to know how much flour might be shipped direct to the soldiers without meatrially hurting home people. There are, perhaps, 5000 families in Cobb county. Mony of these made no reports from the fact that they had less than thirty days’ supply : that they knew nothing of the required report: and possibly a few from in difference or lack of interest. Peo ple are everywhere urged to live on the rquired 6 lbs. per month per in dividual, that the flour on hand may Jast till the harvest of the new crop. Merchants/ are cautioned to sell only 5 lbs. sugar to the individual in towns and 10 lbs. to those in country districts. Dr. Soule will pro mulgate regulations within a few day by which those who wish to can fruits and vegetables may get sugar for this purpose. FRIDAY MORNING, APRIL 26, 1918. PROSPECTS GOOD FOR COVERNMENT ROAD Notwithstanding the delays and the seeming indifference and the part of the War Department in the matter of a road to Camp Gordon there are signs that it will be built all right. The building of a large bathing pool at the camp here and orders to wire the camp for electric lights tend to make more certain the camp will be permanent, and this week the au thorities at Washington wired the En gineer at Camp Gordon to hasten his estimates on the cost of the road. It is certain that no other place is available for an artillery range at this time near Camp Gordon, which is to be one of the largest of the can tonments in the country, so the pros pects are still good for the road. DEATH OF MOTHER CALLS SON HOME Rev. Frank E. Jenkins, who has been conducting a series of revival services at the Methodist Church, was recalled to his home in Powder Springs on Tuesday, by . the sudden death of his mother, who was visiting there. Mrs. Jenkins’ home was in Shiloh, near Columbus, and the body was carried there for burial. She was a christian woman, and indeed a mother in Israel ,having given six sons to the ministry. Few women have been so blessed as to be able to make such an offer ing to the service of the Lord, and it is but the enjoyment of her re ward to which she has row been call ed. MRS. W. W. GLENN DIES IN CALIFORNIA. Mrs. W. W. Glenn, 58 years old, died at her home in Los Angeles on Sunday, after a long illness. She had many friends and relatives here, having lived for years where Nolan’s Sanitarium now stands. Mrs. Glenn, who was Miss Jane Brewer, is sur vived by three brothers, Mr. W. D. Brewer, of Atlanta, and Messrs. J. F. and W. A. Brewer, of Marietta. subsided. PAVING PASSES CITY COUNCIL At a meeting of the city council on Wednesday night, the Church Street paving ordinance was unanimously passed. : This has been under consideration for some time, and has had more or less opposition at some meetings held for the purpose of discussion, but a report made to the council on some legal aspects of the case by the city attorney on Wednesday evenin, clear ed the way for definite action, and on a vote in council the ordinance was unanimously passed. When this and the Atlanta street paving. is finished, we will have two miles of paved highway through our town, which will be a credit to us, and a standing advertisement to the thousands of: tourists who annually pass through Marietta. We hope no further opposition will develop to the early beginning and rapid completion of the work. ANNUAL SACRED HARP SINGING AT COURT HOUSE The annual Sacred Harp singing at the Cobb County Court House comes off next Sunday, April 28th, from 9 a. m. to 4p. m. Everybody is in vited to attend. The J. S. James class from Atlanta, the Reeves boys from Milton county, and many good singers from elsewhere will be pres ent and those who like the good old church music of years gone will en joy a feast of song. Nothing short of a big snow or an earth-quake will keep the crowd from coming. Be you one among the number. Messrs. M. W. Murdock, E. G. Me- Garity, and W. H. COURIER, ESTABLISHED 1901 | Official Organ of the City of Marietta No Less Than 32 Cents Ask ed If Prices Are to Be Fixed By Congress A mass meeting of representative citizens of the county was held in the Court House last Saturday, and organized by electing Mr. John L. Butner, of Powder Springs, as chair man, and John P. Cheney, of Mari etta, as Secretary. The subject of the meeting was to discuss Legislation now pending inf Congress seeking to fix the price of cotton, and Mr. A. E. Keese, repre senting the Cotton States Advisory Marketing Board was present and ex plained how the Bills now pending were likely to affect the people of the cotton growing states. Others discussing the proposed Legislation were Messrs. Jas. T. An derson, J. M. Fowler, John P. Che ney, T. W. Read, John L. Butner, and J. A.' Benson. The resolutions at tached were unanimously adopted re questing that, if the price of cotton is fixed, it be fixed at not less than 32 cents per pound. A committee consisting of Messrs. Jas. T. Anderson,.R. A. Hill, T. W. Read, John L. Butner, W. P. Jiles and others were appointed to go be fore the County Commissioners at their next meeting to ask that they make an appropriation of $200.00 similar to appropriations now being made by other counties in the State, for the support and maintenance of the Marketing Board. The Board now maintains an office in Washing ton with a highly competent head in charge whose duty it is to see that we get justice in the proposed legis lation. Marietta, Ga., April 20th, 1918. At a meeting of citizens of Cobb Count, held this date, the following resolutions were unanimously adopt ed. (1) We hereby enter our protest a gainst the Ayers Bill now pending in Congress. If the object of the Bill is to encourage the production of food, we submit that no mere im portant food and feed crop is grown than that derived from the seed of cotton. (2) The present price of cotton is only on a parity, as heretofore, with that of wheat, meat, iron, etc. (3) To set a price on cotton and not fix the price of meat, mules, corn, labor, machinery, farm implements, etc., would be grossly unfair to the cotton farmers. (4) If the price of cotton is fixed at all 'we respectfully urge that a mini mum price of 32 cents per pound, and not less, shall be fixed. (5 We urge upon the consideration of Congress the fact that a good price for cotton enables our farmers to devote a greater acreage to food crops. (6 We endorse the organization of the Cotton States Marketing Board. (7 We request the Board of Commis sioners of Cobb County to appropri ate $200.00 for the support of said Cotton States Marketing Board so that it’s work for our interests may continue. We hereby certify that the fore going resolutions were unanimously adopted and that the meeting was a representative one of the business in terests of the County. JOHN L. BUTNER, Chairman, JOHN P.
