Family tlwmMiiwN Mfl Peculiar!! lea.
I( te just the same, berate, in mmul
matter*. Tliere ore family characters
ami fmiiily intelligence^ U then an
family faen and family figures. Bach
individual member of the brood haa his
own variety of Oils typical character, but
in nil it* bade h mon or ten pereistent,
though nny one particular trait, even the
most marked, may be wanting or actually
replaced by ita exact oppo.ii Still,
viewing tlio family Idlotyncrtuie* aa a
.♦hole, each member Is pretty sun to
possess a vary oonsidwabls number of
peculiarities 'mors or less in common
with ail the remainder. This, Jana may
be passionate, while Emily la sulky; Dick
may be a spendthrift, while Thomas is a
miser. But Jane and Diok are both hu
morous, Emily and Thomas both musical,
Thomas and Diok both sensitive, Emily
and Jane both sentimental, and all four
alike satirical and alike fond of pets and
animals. Look at the persistent Tenby
Ionian tono in Charles and Alfred Tenny-
‘son; look at the parodying power of the
two Smiths in “Rejected- Addressee;”
look at the usreoci, the Rossettis, the
Hemckels, and then say whether even
minute touches of taste and sentiment do
not come out alike in brothers and sisters.
Almost everybody who meets brothers
or sisters or cousins of his own after a
long separation (when uas has not dulled
his apprehension of tlio facts) must hbve
noticed, with mingled amusement and
dissatisfaction, in ten thousand little
ways and sayings, how very closely he
and they resemble one another. Some
times the very catchwords and phrases
they use, their pet aversions and their
pet sympathies, turn out at every twist
of life to bo absurdly identical. One
may even bo made aware of one’s own
unsuspected and unobtrusive failings by
observing them, as in a mirror, in the
minds of one’s relations, like King
George’s middy in Mr. Gilbert’s story,
who meets himself on an enchanted
island, and considers his double the most
disagreeable fellow he ever came across.

Chlnote Vcu'lfntr Women,
lb my.mind, tat? unique feature of
Hong Kong street < mv the professional
menders, or sewing wolnen, ugly, old
Chinese women, with half dwarfed feet,'
whp come out in tho' morning with low
stools and a'basket of rags and sit by tho
curbstones or in archways, recesses or
doorways, and sow away all day long.
They do not exactly dam stockings and
sew on buttons, but their labors corre
spond to that, and for a triflo a poor
workman can have his tattered coat
patched and mended or his old garments
made over. Peddlers of oranges, dry
goods, lamps, toys and fancy wares stop
howling their wares through the streets
to chat with the professional menders,
and of all Chinese women tho menders
seem to have the pleasantest lot.
They ore wise looking old Bettys, all
of them, and sometimes they wear huge
horn rimmed spectacles that make them
look-like Minerva’s bird. To watch them
planning and'turning and twisting their
garments and rags Is most diverting; and
two old menders down the road hero are
beginning to look upon me as an intend
ing customer from the way in which
they try'to further engage my attentidb
each time they display their skill. The
menders %ok down the social ladder a
great ways at the coolie women employed
on publio works in the streets, but tho
coolie women probably find some further
below to drop their superior gnzo on.—

1 know of a Scot, who, rather than
pay tho toll of a bridgo in Australia,
takes off Ids coat, which he rolls and
straps on his back, in order to swim

On tlio contrary, his generosity is well

see why ho should pay for crossing a
