New York. —Friends of Mrs. Elsie French Vanderbilt deny most em phatically that there was more than appeared on the surface in the at tention paid to her by the Right Honorable Gilbert George Reginald Sackville, Earl De Warr, dusing the last voyage to this country of the Mauretania. The earl was Mrs. Vanderbilt's constant companion on the trip’, It is said, and the rumor of a possible engagement was launched into circulation when the nobleman was seen escorting the society leader from the big ship to the pier. The earl, who is forty-four, has been mar ried twice. His first wife, the Honorable Muriel Brassey, whom he mar ried in 1891, procured a divorce in J 902. The following year he married Mary Clavering, daughter of Col. C. 1.. Tredcrnft, who instituted divorce proceedings a few months ago. He has two daughters, Lady Myra Idina and Lady Alice Ela Muriel, and a son, Lord Buckhurst.
