FRIDAY, AUGUST 14 Reynolds' Reply To Tom Watson Wife and Children’s Religion Point of Attack By Watson (From Watson's Jeffersonian, An it. 13, 1914.) .PROTESTANTS! DON’T ELECT THEBE NEAR CATHOLICS TO CONGRESS. Nowhere on earth are the Roman Catholic priests Interfering with poli tics so openly, as in our own coun try. They keep a lobby at Washing ton, all the time. They hold the sword over our dally papers. They dictate to congress and secure money for sectarian purposes. They have made their chaplains officers of the navy, so that they can force their pagan worship on our sailors. They have a Jesuit spy at the White House standing between the president and his people. They are trying to use this govern ment to save the prests and grandees of Mexico from the just wrath of the constitutional forces. It Is the worst time in the world to elect flabby Protestants and near- Catholics to congress. One of these flabby Protestants arc noar-Catholics is Joseph S. Reynolds, of Augusta. He meekly did what Maj. J. C. C Black refused to <!o: he signed over his children to popery before the priest would marry him to his Cath olic wife. Instead of making the Catholic girl come across, Joseph, the flabby Pres byterian, went on hts knees to the priest and signed away the religion of his children, enslaving them before they were born. Major Black refused to make that cowardly surrender to Rome. Suppose all of us should do what Joe Reynolds did, what would become of the Protestant churches? When Presbyterians agree to beget sons and daughters to Italian popery, what are such Presbyterians worth tC religion and to civil liberty? Charles Edwards of Savannah is also a flabby near-Catholic. His res olution in favor of the Irish Catho lics who have been preparing to shoot down Irish Protestants prove that. Scratch Edwards and vote for Over street. Scratch Reynolds. If you prefer Vinson to Evans, scratch Evans also. If you prefer Evans to Vinson, scratch Vinson and Reynolds. To the Voters of the Tenth Con gressional District: In publishing this article of Thomas E. Watson, I do so without the slight est fear of being misjudged or mis understood and because 1 desire to meet the issue (if it is an issue) squarely, trusting you to Judge as to whether or not Watson's charge is an argument against my candidacy. 1 have known from the beginning of fhis campaign that Mr. Watson was my enemy and that he would do all in his power to prevent my election to congress, not because of the religi ous convictions of my wife, but be cause of my long and faithful service within the ranks of the Democratic party. From the beginning of the race I have steeled myself for his attack: for we all know that Tom Watson can hit hard when he has anything to hit with. The long looked for blow has fallen. What do you think of it? What better argument could I offer In favor of my candidacy? The Great Thomas Eat-em-alive WHY PAY MORE? H. Kress. Watson searches blindly for months to find something to bring against me, now turns up, Just six days before the election, with a cowardly attack upon my wife and children. Don't you know that If he knew of a single good (or imaginary) reason why I should not represent this dis trict in congress that he would have brayed it from the house tops? The essence of a Democratic gov ernment is "religious freedom." Wat son would not only deny you this right, but would take from man the privilege of mairying the woman of his choice. I say to him that I had rather be husband to the woman 1 have taken than be exalted to the highest post on earth, by such bigots and hypocrites as he can influence. My children are FREE AGENTS, as God made them and all human be ings: They must work out their own careers and salvation as you and I work out ours. Jos. S. Reynolds Will Win As the close of the campaign ap proaches it is supposed that the friends of the candidates are marshaling all their forces preparatory to the battle of the ballots. Especially is this true of the Rey nolds headquarters, where the activ ity is never relaxed. Mr. Reynolds pitched his candidacy on a high plane and while he has been severely ar raigned in some quarters has observed scrupulously the ethics of clean meth ods. He and hts campaign managers have conducted a clean campaign and have the satisfaction of knowing that these methods have met with a favorable response. Mindful of the amenities incident to a decorous, gentlemanly canvass he has not visited a county in which any of his opponents re side. From all parts of the district de spatches convey the intelligence th|t Hon. Jos. S. Reynolds is leading easily. Is Tom Watson sincere in ltis hatred to the Catholics? Then why, with Wesjeyan, Agnes Scott, Bessie Tift, Shorter and other female colleges of the highest type in this state, did he send his OWN DAUGHTER to a Catholic Convent, where she was placed under the care and guardian ship of a CATHOLIC PRIEST, to complete her education? My children have never attended a Catholic school. And when they are prepared for college I shall select the college that my Judgment tells me is best for them to attend, whether it be Catholic or rrotestant, Just as you would do in the Interest of your child. If Watson is sincere in his fight against the Catholics, why is It true that he has not warmed a seat in a Protestant church in five years? I have no prejudice against any man's religion or conscience, but I am an old line Presbyterian and I be lieve in men having the courage of their convictions. I believe in the doctrine of Christ, and that he meant it when he said that "the greatest of these is Charity." I believe in the absolute separation of the church and state, and that every man and every woman has the everlasting right to worship God according to the dic tates of his or her conscience. I be lieve in men, and I believe in you; and I would rather have (he support of honest and sincere Christians and lose this election, than win the sup port of the Demagogue and BIGOT. I appeal to the manhood of the dis trict rather than to the prejudice com mercialized by Thomas E. Watson. Yours truly, JOSEPH S. REYNOLDS. (Adv.) fort despite the fact that assurances of support are coming from unexpo# - ed quarters. In Its entirety the situation Is emi nently satisfactory and is a source of gratification both to Mr. Reynolds and his friends. In the expressive vernacular of one of his admirers, "Reynolds is runninig like a rabbit." Up In “Link." Mr. P. A. Motes has just returned from a visit to Lincoln county. Mr. Motes says that all the candidates must regard Lincoln with a jealous eye as they were putting in the halle-* lujah licks. An Opportunity AND How To Improve It In the legends of mythology, Op portunity is pictured as a bald per sonage. How suggestive! Opportunity Is the flower of time; for as the stalk remains after the flower has been culled, so Time re mains after the Opportunity has fled forever! Grasp Time by the forelock. Plant your fingers firmly on Time's pom padour as he flees, and freeze to It! Neglecting this, a naked pate Is tha I prize! ' Opportunities, like Crises, have to he met and Individual Success or Failure—ln other words, Destiny—ls wholly contingent upon measuring up the opportunity. Tenth, a splendid opportunity has been offered their prospective con stituents by the gentlemen who have announced themselves. The Voters of the Tenth have cer tainly had an opportunity to weigh Men, Measures and Methods. Perhaps—nay, surely—the best method of testing Men is by contract —comparison. In order to the bet ter contrast or compare Individuals, it is imperative that there should bo a correct Ideal of the Attributes which belong to and constitute manhood. In the suggestive phraseology of the ancient Greeks, the word "man" meant "he who walks erect." He that walks thinks, acts and is erect. Whose gaze Is so erect that it Is focugcd on tha stars and not on the sewers. “Who Walks Erect!’’ Tea, erect not only In carriage but conduct! Measured in the terms of the above by every token Joseph R. Reynolds is a Ma n . By his past he has fully measured up to the full stature of a well rounded manhood Hnd you have an opportunity to give him an opportu nity to serve you in a highor sphere.
