Favorable weather for the Argentine harvest counted against the bulls as did talk of high freight rates on the Atlantic. Commis sion houses indulged In free selling. After opening l-4c off to a like amount up, the market underwent a moderate decline all around. Continued fine weather made the corn market easy. WEEK IN COTTON New York.—The plans for re-opening the cotton exchange have at last been successfully consummated and trading will be both here and in New Orleans on Monday morning. Liverpool re-opened for restricted trading last w r eek, and the restriction on fresh sell ing was removed on Thursday, so that next week all three of the big futures markets will be doing business for the first time since the demoralizing events of last July. Trading here will be in the new style contracts for January and later delive ries, while the board of managers will request members to limit their business to the liquidating of December of the old interest and today’s ballot liquidating 22,500 bales of the Liverpool straddle in terest will be the last under the inter national agreement. The local traders are anticipating an active business in |the new government contracts when the trade has once been fully adjusted to the rules and regulations. The gen eral situation, meanwhile has shown a further improvement. A good demand has been reported for spot cotton in the South, both from exporters and inves tors, and prices have worked generally higher in the interior markets. High ocean freight rates and scarcity of ton nage are giving shippers some concern and domestic mills are still reported to be holding off or buying only in small lots, as though anticipating lower prices within the next two or three months, when available supplies in the South will have reached the maximum. A comparison of the last ginning fig ures with the fnto-sight movement, however, indicates that farmers are holding the bulk of their cotton, and lo cal brokers claim that the improvement in the export outlet has absorbed dis tVess. cotton.
