HOST SHOUT THE VERDICT: 'NOT conn’ Haverstraw Town Clerk Ac quitted By Jury For Shooting His Son-in-Law to Death. Demonstration By Friends in Court. New City, N. Y. —William V. Clesry, town clerk of Haverstraw and demo cratic leader In Rockland County, was acquitted by a jury In supreme court here tonight of the charge of murder lr the first degree on which ho was tried for killing Eugene M. Newman, his son-ln-lnw. Announcement of the verdict was the signal for demonstration by Cleary's friends In tlie courtroom. Effects of the Strain. When the Jury sent word that it had agreed, Cleary was brought In. He showed the effects of tho strain he had been under. Mrs. Cleary was overcome by a nervous attack and was taken from the room. When tho jury filed in it was ap parent what the verdict would tie. The foreman when asked what tho Jury had decided, almost shouted the words "not guilty.” Applause followed the announce ment. Cleary seemed dazed at first Hnd when he regained his composure asked permission to thank tho Jury. It was granted nnd he Rhook hands with each one of the twelve men, Raving “Gentlemen, I thank you for your merciful and righteous verdict.” 8 to 4. It was learned that at no time dur ing the Jury’s deliberations were more than four votes east for Cleary's con viction on any ballot. Tlie vote stood, 8 to 4 for acquittal until the last bal lot. One of the Jurors said the scene between father and daughter In the courtroom yesterday had affected them greatly, impressing them with a belief in Cleary’s overpowering love for the girl. Cleary will go away for recuperation and experts soon to resume his post of clerk of the town of Haverstraw, where he is a Democratic leader. Didn't Know of Marriage. Newman was shot on July 23rd, last, while he was In Cleary's office in Ha verst ray waiting to tell the town clerk that tie had married his daugh ter. *l'he contenllon of the defense was that although Cleary had learned that ids daughter was to become a mother he did not know tlint Newman had married her. Tlie town clerk testi fied that, driven temporarily out of Ills mind, by hts daughter's plight, lie liad no recollection of events imme diately preceding tlie shooting or of the tragedy Itself. She showed comparisons of poultry marketed fresh and after being frozen forty-one weeks nnd drew tlie conclusion that with the same handling both would be equally valuable food. Dr. Pennington, under questioning, declared that in her investigation of cold storage plants she had found nothing to indicate thnt cold storage facilities were used to manipulate food prices. EX-U. Mr Meriting was a former treasurer of Yale University and had held exec utive positions with the St. I’aul and Duluth Railroad Company and the Southern Railway Company. He was a director of an Insurance companv, national councilman of the Hoy Scouts of America and treasurer and direetot of the American Association for High way Construction. The Norwegian steam er Hermlon sailed this sfternoon for Genoa, Italy, with 18,000 bales of cotton, the largest cargo of the staple that has left this port this season for a foreign country. The Hague, (via London, 12:18 a. m.l—Noel Buxton, member of the British parliament and chairman of the Balkan committee, and Chnrles Reden Buxton, who recently were shot by a Turk at Bucharest, returned to Salonlki today from Nish, according to a dispatch received here. WIRELESS PLANT BURNS New Orlean, The large wireless plant of the United Fruit Company here was destroyed by frie today with a loss of $75,000. Bear-Admiral Peary Submits Plans For Landing Places Throughout U. S.; Offer Land in Maine and This State. New York —Rear-Admiral Robert E. Peary has submitted to the Aero Cluo of America, it was announced tonight, a plan to establish landing stations for aeroplanes throughout the United States. He and Edwin Gould have offered lands owned by them in Maine and Georgia, respectively, for stations. Admiral Peary is chairman of the club’s aeronautical map com mittee. Admiral Peary said the committee would develop plans for a chain of landing stations for both land and water planes. He pointed out that France, Germany and Italy have established landing places near all cities and central towns. Admiral Peary said the committee had obtained the co-operation of members of the club who owned private yacht land ings and flat lands. Mr. Gould's land Is opposite Jekyl Island. Georgia, on the inside passage, which all small yachts use in running from Charles ton to Palm Beach. The land offered by Admiral Peary Is a 30-acre island ten miles east of Portland, Me.
