Tens of Thousands Orderly in
Midst of Din and Merry
making Last Night.
New York.—New York city welcom
ed the new year In traditional man
ner, the celebration proving one of the ■
most demonstrative on record here.
Uptown street a were Jammed with
laughing, singing crowds. The tens
of thousands were so orderly In their
fnerry-maklng. however, that tha po
lice reserves found little to do except
keep the throngs moving. Cases, res
taurants and hotels, many of which
were permitted to remain open all
night, were filled.
Electrical Illuminations throughout
the city worked overtime and many of
the great buildings were especially
lighted. Municipal Christmas trees
had been left In place and their many
colored lights drew crowds which
were entertained in some cases with
moling pictures and band concerts.
Even the water front added Its share
to the celebration, for hundreds of i
steam whistles on craft In both rlv- |
ers were opened wide at midnight to ]
swell the babble on land. The notes I
of chimes which pealed from churchj
towers almost were drowned by the j
din from sirens and that made by
street crowds with horns, cowbells and
other notse-maklng devices.
In churches throughout the ettj
servlcess were held.
