FIRST PRESBYTERIAN
PHILATHEA CLASS.
The Philathea Class recently or
ganized in the First Presbyterian Sun
day School with Miss Annie G, Wright
as president, and Dr. Sevier as teacher
is growing in interest and in num
bers. The class meets in the ladies'
parlors of the Telfair Building at the
Sunday school hour, 3:30 in the after
noon, an hour convenient to many. A
setierai invitation is extended to all
young women over 16 to join this
class.
DR SEVIER TO PREACH
ILLUSTRATED SERMON.
Sunday evening Dr. Sevier will
preach the first of a series of three
sermons with his illustrations taken
from the work of the railroad. In
choosing his illustrations he is copy
ing the Master who made the Gospel'
story glow with illuminating thoughts
from the work men were doing all
around him. With the special music
and popular themes these evening
services are most popular. The con
gregations almost tax the capacity of
the large church building. All are
invited to hear these sermons, but
especially railroad men and their fam
ilies.
TEACHERS’ CLUB TO MEET.
The Teachers' Club of Richmond
County will hold its regular monthly
meeting Thursday. January 2eth at
4:15 p. m. at the Tubman High
School.
CARDS OF THANKS FROM
THE CHILDREN’S HOME.
We appreciate very much the help
given the home in the Purple Stamp
Contest and wish to thank every one
who cast a vote for the home and
especially those who were kind enough
to work with us.
The five hundred dollar prize won
will be used to reduce the twenty
five hundred dollar mortgage, which
will expire on May 10th of this year,
at which time we will have one hun
dred dollars interest to pay, in addi
tion to the mortgage. Besides this
$2,000 we are carrying two notes
amounting to $558.83 and paying eight
pet cent interest on the entire $3,000,
and would be very grateful to anyone
who would lend us this amount at a
lower rate of interest.
We also thank all those who are
helping u.s pay our grocery bill,
through the auxiliary and hope each
one will try to meet this pledge
promptly. Again thanking each and
everyone who is or has been helping
us, we remain, cordially,
THE CHILDREN’S HOME,
Mrs, E. S. Hollingsworth,
General Manager.

A VISIT TO THEIR PARENTS.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford R. Hughes, of
Clarkesburg, West Va., after spending
the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. J. P.
Hughes have returned to their home.
Mr. Hughes was visiting his father and
mother in Greenville, P. C., and as his
business called him back so soon he did
not get to Augusta, his old home. He
holds the position of foreman of the
B. & O. freight deport and the sixty
men who are working under him think
very much of him. He says his next
trip will be to dear old Augusta.
Mrs. G no Stratton Porter, author
of "Laddie,” "Freckles,” “The Har
vester," and other popular stores, has
built a cabin for herself in conformity
with the life which she has always
lived and written. A recent inter
view with her describes her new home
in the woods.
“All her life this ‘Bird Woman’ has
believed that she would be more at
home in the woods than elsewhere,
and now she is trying it. On her
little estate of 15 acres of wild wood,
with primeval trees upon it, near
Rome City, Ind., she has reared a
bungalow house, called Llmberlost
Cabin. The land runs down to a lake
shore; there is a spring and a clear
ed hill for garden, orchard and pas
ture. Here have been laid off red,
white, pink, blue, lavender and yellow
flower beds of an acre each, in the
deep woods running down to the lake
shore, where wild flowers of each
color named have been planted, be
ginning at water-growth at the lake
and running back so that each plant
has its proper location; vines and
wooden fences stand between the beds
of flowera
Llmberlost Cabin Is situated In the
middle of the yellow bed; it has 18
big rooms and four fireplaces, two
of which Mrs. Stratton-Porter practi
cally built herseif. One Is of white
glacier formation known as *pudden
stone,' the pebbles being red and blue;
and In a big living room there Is one
of field borulders spilt to Show many
colors and flecked with quartz crys
tals that spaTkle like diamonds In the
light.
Llmberlost Cabin Is provided wtth
private gas and electric light plant,
waterworks and telephone and a good
road. The windows In this house are
built with broad, deep casements es
pecially to furnish feeding tables for
the birds. Outside the open porch has
a cement, floor on which In winter
stand sheaves of wheat, apples and
cabbage and celery leaves: and on the
broad sills are scattered chopped
wheat, ground com and baked pota
,*oes and depending from a rope are
f raw meat bones and pieces of suet
There £;«1 the chickadees, titmice,
nut hatches, sap-suckers, flickers,
song-sparrows, Jays, cardinals and
squirrels. A pair of coons Inhabit one
of the hollow trees, also a pair of big
owls. All of this seems a suitable en
vironment of the author of "The Har
vester, and ‘The Song of the Cardi
nal.' ”
