FRIDAY, BIARCH 5 Nowhere Else in the City L Sylvester & Sons Established Nearly Half a Century The Inaugural Ball Room Decorations Were Superb WASHINGTON.—The great court of the pension building, which has been the scene of the chief social function incident to the induction Into office of six presidents of the United States, was last night a picture of rare beauty. WONDERFULLY BEAUTIFUL. The decorations for other inaugural balls have been greatly admired, but there can be little doubt that the committee of architects and decora tors who have had charge of the pres ent work secured wonderfully beau tiful effects rarely if ever before ac complished. The greatest care was exercised to avoid anything in the illumin ating or floral work that would be obtrusive or garish, and soft lights and perfect harmony among all the elements of the decorations have been the result. GREAT CANOPY OF BUNTING INSIDE. The great height of the roof of the building was a serious obstacle to sat isfactory treatment by the decorators, and to overcome It it was found ne<> essary to reduce it some forty or fifty feet; this was done by skilful use of bunting forming a canopy or vault arching across the entire width and length of the building, about one hun dred by three hundred feet. This Headache? Want to know the quickest and best way to stop it? Take Dr. Miles’ Anti-Pain Pills. They are the best because they do not leave any disagreeable, after effects. Just simply quiet the nerve irritation which causes the distress. What is equally important they do not derange the stomach—only a pleasurable sense of relief follows their use. “I am in fairly good health, but sub ject to frequent heavy, cloudy head, and occasionally dull pain. I get relief with one or two of Dr. Miles' Anti- Pain Pills. They are very beneficial to me and I do not like to be without them." D. F. LEWIS, Cleveland, O. The first package will benefit! If not, your druggist will return your money. g “We’ve Got Them Coming’"* ISUITSI Made to Your ft Measure P I SIS.S I || Wold’s Largest Tailors. I Scotch Woolen Mills 1 735 BROAD. The showing includes models in the latest designs, patterns and textures. It will show you the newest wrinkles from New York, the style-center, and it will appeal to your love of econ omy and at the same time, to your desires for sartorial cor rectness. Come and visit the display by all means. vaulted canopy is composed of a se ries of ten by twelv&toot panels, and the bunting is so disposed as to pro duce the effect of sunken panels. The reduction of the height of the roof necessarily shortened the eight mas sive pillars that support it and so temporary Doric capitals were intro duced at the point of intersection. This brought the shortened pillars in to proper temporary construction. The color scheme of the vault is a deep cream or ecru tint which is also car ried behind the two-storied colonnades which encircle the co'lrt, and this forms a background to the floral dec orations in this portion of the build ing, DECORATIONS HARMONIOUS. This effect, together with the light yellow and gold of the arcade, makes the general scheme cream and gotdi and serves as a paler foil for the more brilliant colors at each end in the decoration of the president’s box and of the music stand. This stand, which is in the form of a half octa gon amphitheatre, fills the east end of the large hall for, about forty-five feet and has, a seating capacity suf ficient for a band of seventy, and an orchestra of one hundred and tweiv ty-flve people, who will sing at some of the five concerts to be given to morrow and succeeding afternoons. The seats of the stand rise in tiers toward the east wall, where large masses of tropical plants and flowers, rising to a height of forty-five feet! frame in the decorative vista at that end. The interval between the back of the stand and the railing of the second gallery is filled by a series of metallic panels, serving as sounding boards, treated with a gold finish and embellished with garlands, festoons and flowers in keeping with the gen eral plan of Jhe decorations. AMERICAN FLAGS FIGURE LARGELY. Above the music stand a large trophy of American flags Is suspended from the vaulted celling overhead. The #ront of the stand is finished with a series of panels, the upper one in each series being filled with a gold net-work against which largo Bougainvillea plants from the Philip pines placed about, producing at this point a light and transparent effect of pale rosy purple and gold as a foreground to orchestra, and par ticularly to the uniformed bands oc cupying the central portion of the mu sic stand. PRESIDENT’S BOX MAFNIFICENT. The president’s box is the most’oT nate and a very pleasing feature of the whole scheme, the box Is located at the west end and projects about fifteen feet into the hall at a lower level than the floor of the second gallery, with which it is connected by a flight of broad steps. This balcony extends to the floor, and in order to enhance its architectural effect, as well as to reduce the amount of space occupied on the main floor, the corners are cut off, forming an octag onal bay. This arrangement brings the presidential party Into full view. The presidential box occupies the width of three sections of the ar cade. about thirty feet In extent, and depth has been made by opening the central one of the seel lons and drap ing it so as to form a loggia. This loggia is lined wlah scarlet and is indirectly lighted to produce a soft glow. The central opening with its arch and columns of gold is flanked by two broad side curtains of rich fabric, and crossed overhead by a heavy lambrequin with bands of gold and gold fringe, the whole crowned by s trophy of American flags with a gold ball and eaglb as its central feature. SUPERB ILLUMINATION. The illumination of the great ball room was carried out on radically dif ferent lines from those followed hith erto. Instead of embodying the lights in the floral decoration, fol lowing the structural linos of th«< cornice or arches, the principal groups of lights are placed with a view to securing the best general il lumination falling equally upon the decorations and the guests. This result is secured by suspending from the vaulted ceiling eighteen large fix tures composed of hexagonal frames supporting clusters of one hundred and twenty-five globular lamps ol frosted glass, each lamp hanging from a separate wire, and the whole ar ranged in a bov.i-shaped mass. Each bulb hngs from a white rosette which reflects and softens the light. This mass of drooping lights is suspended by six gilded chains secured to a sturdy ring and heavy chain above, suspending the entire fixture from the vaulted celling. The scheme is a cluster of many small lamps with the effect of soft candlelight an(l is strik ingly beautiful and artistic. Supple menting this provision for general il lumination, half octagon brackets, each with a cluster of twenty small lamps suspended from it, suspended singly from it, are placed over each of the first story columns of the ar cade. The supporting frames for these serve as receptacles for large bloom ing plants, the large branches of rambler roses, azaleas and yellow for cythia present the appearance of huge bouquets, and as there are a hun dred or more of them extending around the four sides of the great In terior, the effect is extremely pleas ing, and at the same time give the needed strong color In the decoration of the arcade. From these points ferns, palm leaves. FLORAL DECORATIONS. Southern clematis with flowers in termingled extend across the inter vening panels. This decorative ar rangement is carried out against the cream colored background within the arcade, forming a continuous treat ment around the entire hall, except at the president’s box, where more brilliant colors are used in the floral decorations. At the sides of the box are arranged masses of evergreens; its base is created by rambler roses which extend freely over the rails of the balcony, forming a marked con trast in their freedom of growth with the more formal lines of festoons and wreaths that decorate the face of this railing on a backgorund of gold. This stronger floral feature is again supported on each side by two Pom peilan lamp standards in bronze sup porting opalescent balls of illumlna tlon. The outer corners of the presi dent’s box support four groups o* brackets of light, harmonizing with those of the arcade, but on a lower level which carry rich clusters of flowers. This scheme of floral em bellishment was carried throught the various reception rooms and culmi nate® in the president’s room in the southwest corner of the second story, where the mantel and fire place am banked with masses of ferns, orchids and American beauty roses, appro priate supported by draping and light to bring the whole into a har monious scheme. THE AUGUSTA HERALD HMDS MO FEET ITOfM Suffered Terribly from Eczema which Made Hands and Feet Swell, Peel and Get Raw —Arms Affected, Too —Gave Up Hope of Cure. USED CUTICURA AND WAS QUICKLY CURED I suffered from eczema on my hands, arms and feet for about twelve years, my hands and feet would swell, sweat and itch, then would become callous and get very dry, then peel oil' and get raw. I tried most every kind of salve and ointment without success, only got temporary relief. As soon as I would leave off using them I would be as bad as ever. I tried several doctors, took arsenic for two years and at last gave up thinking there was a cure for eczema. A friend of mine insisted on my trying the Cutieura Remedies but, supposing they were the same as other ‘cures’ I had tried, I did not give them a trial until I got so bad that .1 had to do something. I secured a cake of Cu ticura Soap, a box of Cutieura Oint ment and a bottle of Cutieura Resolvent and by the time they were used I could see a vast improvement, and my hands and feet were healed up in no time. I used several bottles of Cutieura Ro solvent. This was. over a year ago and have had no trouble since. 1 think I am entirely cured. Charles T. Bauer, R.F.D. 05, Volant, Pa., Mar. 11, 190 S.
