WIFE COMES HOME AND BULLETS FLY New York Cotton Broker Has Exciting Time at His Chapel Hill Home. NEW YORK.—Pistol shots, leaps from windows, an Incidental burglar scare and other pleasantries of the kind marked an episode early the other morning at the summer resi dence at Chapel Hill, N. J„ of Wil liam H. Wicks, a cotton broker, with offices In this city. While nobody was killed or even Injured, there is a strong likelihood that the incident will have a still more interesting sequel. Wr3. Wicks, wife of the broker, left her home a iew days ago, ostensibly for a visit to Boston. Her husband remained at Chapel Hill and had long since retired when the disturb ance occurred. He wns aroAfced by the noise of somebody trying to break down the front door; whereupon, clad only in his night raiment, he leaped from a second story window. In the meantime, five or six pistol shots had been fired but Mr. Wicks paid no attention to these. He hur ried away in the darkness and bor rowed an overcoat which he put on over his pajamas. Then he awakened such of hts neighbors whom the clamor had not already aroused, and led the posse back to his home, de claring burglars had been trying to break in, When the relief party got there much surprise was expressed when it was found that the supposed burg lars were Mrs. Wicks, who had un expectedly returned home nad natur ally wished to get In, and John Sned ‘ecker, chief of police of Atlantic Highlands, whom! she had asked to accompany her and see no harm befell her. That was the close of the incident, except that not long after daybreak a woman, who was not Mrs. Wicks, left the house and took a train for New York. She was closely followed by another woman and a man, who WANTED: 50 MEN AND WOMEN Green & Horsey, the enterprising druggists, are advertising today for fifty men and women to take advan tage of the special half price offer they are making on Dr. Howard's celebrated specific for the cure of constipation and dyspepsia, and get a fifty cent package at half-price, 25 cents. LOCAL MANUFACTORY INCREASING ITS FORCE In The Herald today appears an advertisement under the help wanted heading calling for fifty more hands at the silk mills on the canal. This little paragraph Indirectly calls at tention to the great progress made by this industry in Augusta. It began with less than twenty-five employes and has now about eighty. The ad vertisement means that at least a hundred more are to be added to the pay rolls at once. A new department, has been added, hence the call for more help. It is these kind of small industries that are steadily advancing Augusta up the ladder of progress. vaudeville] At the Grand. Is one of the best "bits" seen here this season. This clever pair will introduce a lot of new stuff during the week. The big feature of the show is Bristol's Equine Wonders, certainly the best pony and horse act ever of fered hi Augusta, and especially at the very small price of admission.
