C—Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Mary Armor addressed a large gathering of women of the city at the First Baptist church and organized a W. C. T. Union, with the following officers: Mrs. Jerome Clottworthy, president; Mrs. R. Bruce Carter, vice president; Miss Groham, secretary; Mrs. H. M. Clark, corresponding sec retary, and Mrs. E. P. Arthur, treas urer. Twenty-seven women present joined the union and are very enthusiastic over the organization. AIKEN COUNCIL HELPS PAY NURSE’S SALARY Makes Appropriation To Aid the Tuberculosis League in its Work. Special to The Herald. AIKEN, S. C.—At a call meeting of the city council Tuesday night the committee from the Tuberculosis League of this city along with the president. Dr. Fillmore, of Montmor i nei, asked the city to appropriate the sum of $25 per month to help pay the salary of Miss Ravenel, the train ed nurse that is employed by the league. L. cere, Roscoe Courtney and Brooks Boylston, members of the local military company of this city, attended the entertainment Wednesday nignt given by the Oglethorpe Military com pany of Augusta. Hon. J. Cal Courtney, of Kitching Mill section of the county, paid a visit to our city recently. Mr. and Mrs. J. r. Ropes expect to re turn to Boston on the 23rd inst. At the lecture Tuesday at the court house the sum of $l3O was contributed by tile audience for the W. C. T. U. In South Carolina. Mrs. Armor's lecture Wednesday waa attended by a still larger crowd than Tuesday. The court house was packed. L>r. J. H. Boston, of Beech Island, at tended the meeting at the court house Tuesday. Pr. J. H. Burnett, Hon. G. R. Webb, Miss Clara Harrigall and D. T. Quattle bnum, of Graniteville, were among the large crowd that came to the lecture Tuesday night. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. H. Bolen, of West berry, Conn., will return home on the 19th Inst. Mr. and Mrs. F. O. Beach expect to li-ave for the north on the 24th. Mr. C. W. Dolan and household left Sunday for Rosemont, Pa., in his private car, “Republic.” Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Hitchcock and Miss Eustls and family expect to leave for their northern home on the 19th. Okla homa and Kansas meet for that pur pose. The association will aim primarily to build up Galveston port as a distribu tion point for goods from the enst. All big cities in this territory have sent rep resentatives, including Dallas. Fort Worth, Houston. San Antonio, Galves ton, Waco, Amarillo, Topeka VDenver. Oklahoma City. Witchita tried to secure the convention, but was unsuccessful. Texas will receive the most benefit as a result of the movement, and It Is be lieved it will result In making Galves ton the second largest port in the coun try In a few years. When the Panama canal Is completed the association expects to arrange for western shipments also to come via Galveston, thereby saving millions an nually on shipments east and west.
