America until very recently knew Henrik Ibsen only as a dramatist, a caustic llteratrur who dipped his pen in vitriolic satire and virtually tore to shreds the strands of convention ality that hold the soclnl fabric in tact. Ibsen, the pessimist, the vit riol thrower, the enemy of the beau tiful and righteous, was well known here, but Henrik Ibsen, the poet, the philosopher, the optimist, the patriot, has only become familiar to us since we have become acquainted with his "Peer" Gynt," for in this gem of char acter drawing we the Norwegian dramatist revealing his other and true self; the boy who slept on the Ri viera, who had day dreams of his rugged Norse mountains and who wrote of the legends of his home land as only an exile can write. It was under the cotnblued Influ ences of hlB country's folklore and ihe intoxicating perfumes of the Med iterranean shore that Ibsen wrote " Peer Gynt,” reflecting therein a hid den page of his Iwn earlier lift’s his tory. But it was not until “Peer Gynt" was revealed In dramatic form that the true Import of this marvelous fantasy was disclosed in its wonder ful wealth of satirical coloring, and sound philosophy, little wonder there fore, that It became tlv most dis cussed play before the public, for as an eminent professor wrote: "Peer Gynt" has enough material In it to construct n'dozen ordinary comedies. Richard Mansfteld achieved the greatest success of his successful ca reer In "Peer Gynt." and Louis James who was fortunate in securing the much coveted manuscript and entire original production has duplicated the same success Mr. James will appear at the Grand Thursday, April 29th.
