PERFECT TONIC Bom*thin* more than nn ordinary tonic is required to restore health to a weakened, run-down system; the medicine must possess blood-purifying properties as well, because the weakness and impurity of the circulation is responsible for the poor physical condition. The blood does not contain the necessary quantity of rich, rod corpuscles, and is therefor, a weak, watery stream which cannot afford sufficient nourishment to sustain the system in ordinary health. A poorly nourished body cannot resist disease, and this explains why so many persons aro attacked by a spall of sickness when the use of a good tonic would have prevented the trouble. In 8. 8. 8. will be found both blood-cleansing and tonic qualities combined. It builds up weak constitutions by removing all impurities and germs from the blood, thus supplying a certain means for restoring strength and invigorating the system. The healthful, vegetable ingredients of which S. S. 8. is composed make it splendidly fitted to the needs of those systems which are delicate from any cause. It is Nature's Perfect Tonic, free from all harmful minerals, a safe and pleasant acting medicine for persons of every age. S. P. S. rids the body of that tired, worn-out feeling so common at this season, improves the appetite and digestion, tones up the stomach, acta with pleasing effects on the nervous system, and reinvlgorates every portion of the body. A certain very popular visitor was recently assured by an appreciative Augusta woman that "Like Washing ton you live in the hearts of your countrymen.” "But unlike Washington,” was the frank reply, “j do not always tell the truth.” All the women are going quite wild on the subject of proving they have at least one equality with men by running their own motor cars. One determined lair owner of an automo bile is faithfully practicing every day under the tutelage of a competent chauffeur, but she has not as yet suc ceeded in gaining the confidence of all the friends, one of whom-ia care ful mother—said: "I have been an xious enough about my little daugh ter going out in the green when there was known to be a loose horse in town, but now that these is a loose au tomobile, she will certainly have to play in the backyard." A young Augustan has coined a new expression. In referring to a wea-known Augusta woman, he said: "No, I don’t think she is pretty, but her inward features are beautiful.” When pressed for an explanation, he disclosed the fact that he was re ferring to her many accomplishments and her superior character. A careful Summerville house-keep er had noted with surprise that sev eral timeß after the family were seat ed at the dinner table the silver for her personal use was brought to her on a tray, but she failed to remark upon it for some time. At length one day she said to her butler: "Why do you not place my knife and fork when you set th<} table?” “Well, you know, ma'am, you are allers savin' how they’s dusty or sticky, so I Jes keeps ’em in ’monia water, pipin' hot 'till you’s seated.” A gentleman who has recently be come a citizen of Augusta was over heard the other day singing the praises of our city. Said he: “I like Augusta and I like-Augus tans. They seem bright, cheerful and happy ;and why should they not be? Nature has been bountiful in its gifts to this locality and there is here all around you all that makes life worth the living. A beautiful city truly, with delightful people, charm ing surroundings, a healthful clim ate, and the natural advantages and facilities for worthy and enterpris ing men to gain a competency as far as worldy goods are concerned. “I am a little Inclined to think that your people make almost too much ado about your winter climate and your struggle for tourists trade dur ing wtnter. If necessary, bring such mat ters up for consideration before your Chamber of Commerce or Board of Trade. "For the size tis your city I believe you have more pretty women than 1 ever saw anywhere, and I have travelled some, too. And the beauty of your women is not confined to any class or age. They are all beautiful i—not literally all, but a very great majority of them, and I mean beauti ful both in fact* and figure; young ! girls, young ladles, matrons, and even those whose hair is tinged with gray, and with tiny touches of time all— well, you say an old bachelor should —Yes, that’s true. “Now* since you have allowed me to talk so much uninterruptedly, X am going to give you a little lecture, in closing, as the preachers say. I am far from being good—very far— but I love to attend church services. And here let me also add that beau tv Is with you again. Y’ou have beau -1 fiful churches, and I have been to | nearly all of them, sometimes finding j them not as well attended as they | should have been. But this Is a lit jtie digression; what I was getting at |is this. There is not quite enough i welcome for strangers at your I churches. Perhaps this comes of -hav ing so many strangers with you. As I said before I have attended services at nearly all of your churches, but with one or two pleas ing exceptions. X went in and came out without anyone seemingly know ing that. I had. Possibly 1 did not deserve anything better. But the point is this—you see I have to point out my points—a smile of welcome, a hearty hand-shake, a greeting at the door or In the vestibule, an in vitation to see you there again or such other little unconventional pleas antries. are appreciated by “the stranger within your gates" much more than shows itself upon the sur face.
