COLUMBIA, S. C lnformation
reached here today that the recent
critical and sudden illness of the
Rev. Dr. P. F. Kilgo, one of the lead
ing members of the South Carolina
conference, while on a visit to
Cheraw, was due to strychnine pois
oning, due apparently to the care
lessness of some one who prepared
a bottle of Carlsbad salts for him,
which he too"k with him on his trip
to Cheraw from Florence. It appears
that strychnine was at the bottom
of the bottle and got stirred up in
traveling. Dr. Kilgo was so severe
ly shaken with convulsions that his
shoulder was thrown out of place.
He Is resting easy today at his home
In Florence.

COLUMBIA, S, C. —Governor Ansel
has issued extradition papers for
George M. Crone, a private in the
regular army artillery service, sta
tioned at Fort Moultrie, on papers
from Indiana charging him with se
duction which is a penitentiary of
fense In that state. Among the pa
pers was a letter from the adjutant
in charge at Fort Moultrie, saying

large crowd present and enjoyed the
evening very pleasantly. The order

Tragedy Came Near Marr

CHARLESTON, S. C.—A tragedy
came near marking the annual pic
nic of St. Mary’s Sunday school at
the Schuetzen Platz, in the falling of
little Louis Davenport, a six-year-old
child into a well. The well was
hoarded over the little fellow fell
through the insecure boards and was
precipitated to the bottom of the
well. John P. Devereux thought
that he heard a ory of a child and
upon missing the boy from the posi
tion seen a few minutes before, he
hastily looked Into the well and was
shocked to find the child in the
water. Quickly calling several men
to his assistance, Mr. Devereux low
ered himself Into the well, the men
holding his feet and he reached down
Into the wateT an% grabbed the boy as
he was sinking for the second time.
It was a narrow escape.

here from the federal supreme court,
and nolhing has been heard of the
mandate In the main case, which went
up from Judge Pritchard's court, all
possibility of a rehearing In the cuso
Is now regarded as passed, the time
for filing such a petition having ex
pired last night.
Attorney T, M. Mordecnl of Char
leston, of counsel for the whiskey peo
ple, who carried tho case to tho su
preme court, was here today. He
laughed when the subject of a re
hearing was brought up, but would
not have much to say, though he said
enoiigh to give the Impression that
no such petition was ever contem
plated.
Under the rules of the court tho
mandate In the rrmlri ease will go
down to Judge Pritchard’s court, first,
and will he several days reaching
her- , but. tho mandate In the Ray
case will come straight to the state
supreme court, and should reach here
tonight or tomorrow.
In the meantime the winding up
commission Is making arrangements
to resume operations at the old stand
probably this month, The commission
meets here on the 17th to map out
its work.
