It is claimed that the county pro duces one-eighth of the long cotton of the world, and that Statesboro is the largest inland long cotton market of the world. Much Interest centres in the edu cational institutions of the town. The State Agricultural and Mechanical school of the First Congressional Dis trict under the prlncipalship of Prof. Walter Hendricks, and the Statesboro Institute, conducted by Prof. Win. L. Renfroe, principal and the associate teachers. These schools are first-class in ev ery particular. There are two newspapers, the Bul lock Times, very ably conducted by Mr. j. B. Turner, and the Statesboro News, which has enterprlsed itself Into three issues a week. Both papers do a heavy Job printing business. The News is extending its business every day and Improving its equipment. There is a movement now for a sewerage system, there being already good lighting and water works, long and local telephones. The pastor of the Primitive Bap tist church Is Elder M. F. Stubbs, of t«\e Baptist church. Rev. M. H. Mas sey; of the Presbyterian, Rev. J. I. McLaurin; of the M. E., Rev. Paul W. Ellis. The town justly prides itself In the interest taken In the cause of the Confederacy. Not only has the mon ument been erected by the IT. D. Burns, Dr. C. H. vannah & Statesboro, the Cen. of Ga., the Sav., Aug. & Northern. The town council consists of Mayor H. B. Strange, J. A. McDougald, J. J. Parrish, Dr. A. J. Mooney There are two warehouses, three or four ice factories, three good hotels, two loan comjtanies and stores of all kinds, from soft drink counters to city dejtartment stores Residence of Mr. W. B. Martin, Statesboro, Ga. The Statesboro Mercantile Co., Inc., with Hon. R. Simmons, Pres., T. J. Denmark, secretary and treasurer, and carrying a stock of $65,000 offers everything a buying public may de mand. Mr. O. A. Bland is among the many courteous salesmen of this house. It is an entertainment to pass an hour in their place. The Simmons Co., has as Pres., Mr. Brooks Simmons; as Vice Pres., Mr. W. Homer Simmons; and as Sec. Mr. J. H. Brett. This big concern makes a specialty of Smith buggies, Weber wagons and furniture of ail kinds, together with a splendid milli nery department and in general of all sorts of merchandise. Oliff & Smith have two stores, and do a wholesale as well as retar business in feed stuff o£ all kinds and fancy family groceries. E. C. Oliver makes a speciality of Men’s furnishings. The Raines Hardware Co., carries a varied line of goods in a bright room, and has an accommodating force of clerks, among them, Mr. W. D. Dekel. There are several cotton brokers in this cotton town, among them Mr. R. Simmons. The A. J. Franklin contracting an i supply company is popular and suc cessful. Drs. Sample and Floyd conduct a sanatarium. This, in so fine a clim ate and good altitude as is States boro, is a fitting retreat. There are three sub-experiment stations in the county, conducted re spectively by Messrs. M. J. Rushing, B. S. Mooney, J. G. Tropnell. Mr. R. Lee Moore, besides practis ing law, places farm loans. His friends are already talking about him as a coming solicitor general. Fayette Clary, a young fruit me-- chant, is The Herald local representa tive, and he expects to devote now more time to this work. Mr. D. N. 1 Bacot, of course, from Charleston, is Gen. Supt. of the Sav. & S. R. R., and is interested in the continual development of the town. If the mayor of the city, Hon. li. B. Strange, is as painstaking in his work as S. S. Supt. as he is as city official, the M. E. church is lucky. It was interesting to learn that Cobb county, Ga., was named after the great-great-grand father of Col. H. P. Cobb of Statesboro. There are three banks in the city The Bank of Statesboro. The First National, and the Sea Island Bank; of the First National, Mr. Biooks Simmons is president, and Mr. J. E McCroan is cashier. Special to The Herald. SAVANNAH —Edward Cavanaugh, a city employe, was buried Thursday. He died Wednesday as the result of injuries received when he fell down a flight of stairs leading to the river. He did not regain consciousness after being found. Mr. Cavanaugh, who was about 40 years of age, was formerly a resident of Griffin, where his uncle, named Hartnett, now resides. He had been in Savannah several years. AUGUSTA BANKERS ARE NOW AT TYBEE Augusta will be well represented at the meeting of the state bankers at the Tybee hotel, on Tybee Island Thursday. Those in attendance from Augusta are: Mr. Thos. S. Gray, cash ier of the Union Savings hank; Mr. M. C. Dowling, cashier of the Citi zen’s bank; Mr. E. A. Pendleton, cash ier of the National Exchange hank, and Mr. R. H. Brown, assistant cash ier of the Georgia Railroad bank. The party left the city Wednesday night over the Central road. At the office of the News I met very pleasantly Messrs. J. W. Miller and L. B. Wheeler and E. L. Roberts. While quietly sitting in the office, Mr. J. W. Morris came in and asked to pay his subscription. Upon my re covering consciousness, I was inform ed that this is no very uncommon thing at the Statesboro newspaper offices.
