MILBURN'S GREAT SPEECH.
They were discussing the long
winded introductions that the toast
master was making every time that
he got up to present “the next speak
er of the evening.”
"Do you know,” said one newspaper
man to his fellows about the press
table, "that the best introductory
speech I ever heard was that made
hv John G. Milburn. in introducing
President William McKinley to a gath
ering of many thousands of people at
the Pan-American exposition grounds
in Buffalo the day before McKinley
was laid low by an assassin's bullet.
"How long was the introductory
speech?" another newspaper man
asked.
"Nine words. Mr. Milburn eould
have talked for an hour and couldn’t
have said more than was embodied in
those nine words." said the first news
paper man.
"What did he say?” came from a
half dozen about the press table.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the Presl
dent of the United States,” said the
one who had heard him. and all agreed
that it was an introductory speech
pat; excellence.—From Norman E.
