that the Capital Association Intend
to build will not only be from Atlanta
to Washington, by way of Augusta,
but It will also extend on to Savan

Judge Eve went on to tell of the
I numerous advantages that would he
gained hy the Capital Highway.
There will be the main highway and
I from this the road from Augusta to
Savannah will be Joined extending
the line to the coast. Washington
will in all probability get, the coun
ties near there Interested, and they
will build a good road to the high
way. Athens and other large cities
will do the same.
Col. Daniel S. Henderson, of Aiken,
was in the city Friday morning; be
staled that the work on Ihe road
from Augusta to Aiken has just been
Htarted and that it would bo rapidly
pushed. Col. Henderson said that the
road from Aiken to Lexington was al
ready In good condition, and that the
authorities near Columbia were going
to work and fix the road from Colum

Mayor Dunbar will inako a spirited
fight to decline the petition, as the

MONGER TELLS
WHY POINT PIPER
| NOT ON FREE LIST
WASHINGTON, D. C.—Taking the
floor In defense of the duties of print
! paper recommended by the commit
; tee on finnaee Senator Gallinger to
day made reply to many of the state
ments of Senator Brown in favor of
placing print paper on the free list.
It was expected that Senator Brown
would resume his speech today, but
preferring to postpone any further
remarks upon his amendment, he
gave way to Gallinger.
Gallinger declared that print paper
was cheaper in the United States than
In any other country.
“The price,” he said, “has been kept
down by competition. It is conceded
that no trust exists and that there
Is no combination to advance ' the
lirlce of paper.”
The newspapers, ho declared, were
far from being unanimous on the sub
ject of free print, paper.
"The clamor for this legislation,”
he said, “comes largely from the
cheap and sensational part of the
newspaper press.”
“If Canada,” he said," gets control
of wod pulp and print paper busi
ness, newspapers will be at their
mercy in the matter of price,” he
added.
Senator Owen again calling atten
tion to what he characterized as con
tradictory statements made before
the finance committee declared where
men swear falsely for commercial
profit they should be prosecuted for
perjury. J
“I would like to call attention to
the fact that no one. has been called
to account for making a false state
ment in connection with the tariff,”
said the Oklahoma senator.
FIRE DEPT. PLAN
TO BE DISCUSSED
Fire and Finance Commit
tees Meet Jointly to Con
sider Suggestion For New
Headquarters.
The fire and finance committees of
city council will hold a joint meeting
at 3:30 o’clock Friday afternoon for
the purpose of discusing a plan to
sell the hook and ladder property on
Greene street, the coaling station on
Telfair street, and two vacant lots
adjoining the engine house on Mill
edge street, so as to raise money with
which to erect a new building on the
present site of No. 3 engine house on
upper Broad street, as a headquart
ers for the entire department.
The plan was outlined fully In The
Herald of recent date. Chairman
Kalbfleisch of the fire committee pro
poses to establish the chiefs office,
the headquarters of the alarm system,
the coaling station, the repair shops,
the present company at No. 3, and the
hook and ladder, all under ona roof.
The No. 3 engine house Is below the
level of the street, and water floods
the floor when a hard rain falls. There
are other advantagea to be gained by
executing the plan.
Mayor Dunbar favors the idea
strongly, and will support it. If the
two committees reach a decision fav
orable to the plan, they will report
to council, at its special meeting, call
ed for 4 o’clock.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.
“I see,” -said Deßorum, who was
making a prolonged call, “that an
Ohio genius has Invented a telephone
attachment that will enable one to
see a person miles away.”
“That may be all right as far as it
goes," rejoined Miss Wearyun, “but
It doesn't go quite far enough. An
