SLOGAN CONTEST NAS BEEN PROLONGED 1
ONE WEEK FOLLOWING MANY REQUESTS
Yielding to suggestions that the slogan contest which was inaugu
rated by The Herald to run for ten days from last Saturday, be held
open a little longer, it has been decided not to close the contest Mon
day, but to allow it to run another week. "Ehis will make the contest
close Monday, July 19. The Herald was influenced to this decision
partly by the fact that as the contest goes on, people improve on the
quality of the slogans they send in. This has no doubt been due in a
measure to the printing of some of the slogans which have been re
ceived which allowed everybody to see just what was being done by
others in the contest, and gave fresh ideas and opportunities for improv
ing on those which had already been sent in.
For this reason The Herald is reprinting today the slogans which
have been printed during the last several days which are fair samples
of those which are being sent in.
Brevity and clearness are prime requisites of a slogan. The shorter
it is the better, provided it expresses the idea clearly. It would not be
a bad idea for everybody who has sent in a slogan to try to improve
upon it and send in another or several others. What is desired is the
very best possible slogan for Augusta. Let everybody get in the game.
The person who wins The Herald’s ten-dollar prize is going to do it
with a stroke of the pen. And not only is he going to win the prize
that easily, but he is going to be known for years as the author of Au
gusta’s slogan, the slogan which will go broadcast over the land ad
vertising the city and becoming our trade mark as it were.
The ladles of the city are sending in some suggestions which are
very creditable to them. In fact the writer thinks the one best slogan
which has been sent in comes from one of the lady contestants.

Statistics compiled at the Augusta
post office show that there was a re
markable increase In the number of
special delivery letters received and
despatched, for the half-year ending
June 30, over the same period of
last year.
From January 1 to Juno 30. 4,189
specinl delivery letters were delivered
in Augusta: while 5,383 were des
patched in that time.
I'c is a noteworthy fact that the
convenience and advantages of this
feature of the postal service are be
coming more generally realized, and
resorted to.
There is a surprisingly prevalent
mistake in the minds of the public,
however, as to the security of a spe
cial delivery letter. It is not guar
anteed like a registered piece of mail,
as many think. The ten-eent stamp
only insures immediate delivery the
moment it arrives at its post office
destination.
The service does provide, though,
what is known as a “special register,”
which combines both the prompt do
livery and the security of a registered
piece of mail, and it is frequently
used. Its cost is ten cents for spe
cial delivery, eight cents for the regis
ter, and two cents for postage.
One special delivery clerk and five
substitute letter carriers are employ
ed at the Augusta post office, to de
liver “specials,” and they are kept
busy mos't of the time.

American Exhibition in
London Attracting Wide
spread Attention By Its
Excellence.

nal Exhibition at Shepherds Bush, Tho
charming grounds, are now full of tho
vivid floral beauties of the tfmniner sea
son, whilst everywhere one moves tho
air is full of instrumental music of tho
highest and most pleasing character.
Wlmt at once strikes the visitor is the
energy and searching activity of tho
American trader, as exemplified in the
marvellous variety of mechanical ap
pliances displayed for minimising labour
and the vastness of the resources of tho
states. Yet thin exhibition does not,
in oven a small degree, tho
comprehensive exposition of American
industry and skill. Undoubtedly that
may be so, but the present display Is
nevertheless significant and highly, in
teresting. In tho hall devoted to the
stamp exhibition Is an engrossing col
lection of the postage and revenue
stamps of the United States from the
earliest times.
Two small frames contain exhibits of
unique interests. In the first ar© seve
ral apecimcnts of what Is known as
'‘stamp money. ’ These were used by
the federal government, during the Civil
War between north and south. Owing
to tho scarcity of coinage stumps were
offered and accepted as nWney, but in
passing from hand to hand they had
soon become disfigured. To obviate this,
the Stamps were inserted into small
brass frames with a mica front to show
their vnlue and the portrait of the presi
dent.
The other frame contains two stamps
of perhaps even greater interest. They
are the actual stamps, issued by Eng
land for its colony of American under
the stamp act of 1765. They show the
British Crown, the Star and Garter, and
i the motto. “Ho aoit qui ma ly pense
and hear the values of “ono penny” and
“four pence.” The use of these stamps
was one of the causes of the War of In
dependence and the loss of America as
n British Colony.
To business men another item of in
terest Is found In the Automatic Kloo
trlc company’s stall, which is designed
to demonstrate the practicability of the
automatic telephone. It h vast econo
mic value in urban and long-distance
communication is shown. It does away
entirely with tho intermediary of ex
change operators, is claimed to he ac
curate in its working, and is succinctly
and humoursly described as “tho girlless
and ('useless” system. Facing entrance
of the Illinois Bldg., there Is shown an

HUSSARS WILL
GO INTO GAMP
Capt. J. Coleman Dempsey is in re
ceipt of a communication from Adju
tant General Scott ordering the Rich-'
mond Hussars to go into encampment
in Atlanta not later than the 15th of
July. The regular meeting night of
the Hussars is held on Thursday
night in each week and tho order was
received after the last meeting night
and the company is ordered to report
before the next meeting night.
Capt. Dempsey states ’that owing to
the shortness of the notice it will be
impossible for the Hussars to comply
with the request of the Adjutant.
Cap’t. Dampsey will, however, appeal
to the state authorities in an en
deavor to have the adjutant general
give the Hussars ample titue to pass
on the time (bat will be most con
venient for them to go on an en
campment and the place that it will
bo most convenient for them to go to.
Owing to tho condition of the state
treasurer the adjutant general and
Governor Brown have decided that
the state will staud the expense for
an encampment provided the men
will demand no “per diem.”
Capt. Dempsey is in hopes that the
Richmond Hussars will be allowed' to
