ANNIVERSARY OF BASTILE’S
FALL VERY DEAR TO FRENCH

Prominent French Fam
ilies.
Today, the 1-tth of July is a date
that in French history' has about the
same significance to the modern
Frenchman that the 4th of July has
to an American. It is the anniversary
of the fall of the Bastilo, the fa
mous French prison. For the rea
son that the fall of the Bast lie was
the beginning of the overthrow of
royalism and ushered in republican
ism its anniversary is celebrated in
France more elaborately than any oth
er national holiday. The day is also
celebrated by ihe French in America,
particularly In New York, New Or
leans arid Baltimore.
NATIONAL
FETE DAY.
The 14th of July Is a national fete
day and Is celebrated very much in
the same manner that the 4th of
July Is celebrated in American. There
is the usual pyrotechnic display, but
the beautiful part of lh<- celebration
is the public dancing and fun making
of the people. From early in the
morning until late in the night the
streets are ’thronged with men, wo
men and children, gaily bedecked in
holiday colors, who dance nnd sing
along the street to the music of the
tamborlne or of the public orchestras.
There is to be no formal celebration
of Ihe fall of the Basilic by the
French In Ajignsta, but there are a
grent many Frenchmen hi Augusta,
who In sonic way observe their great
est national holiday. In former years
the French people of Augusta cele
brated by meeting around the festive
board, but as a great many of the
older French citizens of Augusta have
passed away, there will be no such
celebrution this year.

MR. VANDYKE MET
DEATH WHILE IN
SWIMMING POOL
Mr. Jos. J. Vandyke a locomotive
fireman, who lives at 835 Philips St.,
was seized with an attack of the
heart while in bathing Tuesday night
in Lunkey's na'tatorium and died,
without anyone knowing that he was
Hi. His body was in the water about
ten minutes.
Mr. Vandyke in company with Mr.
R. E. Patilla and Mr. J. F. Summerau
went Lankey’s pond about 8 o’clock.
The gentlemen were enjoying them
selves, diving and swimming, and Mr.
Vandyke, who was a good swimmer
was enjoying himself most of all.
While in the water 'they were joined
by Mr. W. L. West.
When the party got ready to come
out, they looked about for Mr. Van
dyke, but not seeing him concluded
that he hud gone to his dressing room.
Not finding him there they returned
to the pond and inaugurated a search
which resulted in Mr. Vandyke’s body
being found in a shallow portion of
Ihe pond near the rope, which
divides the ladies portion of the pond
from that of the men. The body was
found by Mr. J. C. Campbell,
Mr. John Roesel. an expert diver
and swimmer was called, and he, as
sisted by Mr. Campbell hrough't the
body to tlie bank. Dr. 10. E. Murphey,
who was at the pond preparing to go
in. immediately started to work in
an effort to rescussitate Mr. Vandyke.
Dr. Murphey worked on the body
about 45 minutes, but without any
results.
The friends of T\lr. Vandyke did not
sitve up for another hour. All hopes
of bringing life into the body were
finally abandoned, and Mr. L. A. Van
dyke, a brother of the deceased, was
notified of the accident. Mr. \V. T.
Wilson was summoned, and the body
was carried to Ills undertaking par
lors.
The accident Is very deplorable,
and no one regrets in more than Mr.
Lankey. Mrs. Campbell, and their
able corp of assistants. Expert swim
mers are in the pond nt all times,
watching, especially over the chil
dren and persons are always on the
banks watching the entire pond.
Mr. Vandyke was subject to attacks
of his heart, and several times he has
been warned about going in swimming
lie had been seized with these at
tacks while in the bath tub. Tues
day night one of his cordpantons re
minded him of these attacks, but.
they did not think any more about
the matter. It is believed that lie
was sewed with one of the attacks
and went down without being able to
call for help.
The funeral services will be con
ducted at 6:30 o'clock from St. Johns
church. Kev. J. Luke Johnson will
officiate. The Interment will be in the
clt\ cemetery. The funeral will be
largely attended, by the many friends
of the deceased, who were horrified to
learn of his sad and untimely demise.
Mr. Vandyke is survived by a wife,
and seven small children.

O C CURES
0.0.0.0LD SORES
If an old sore existed simply because the flesh was at that
particular spot, it would ba an easy matter to apply some reman., directly
to the place that would kill the germs; or the diseased flesh might be
removed by a surgical operation and a cure effected. But the very fact
that old sores resist every form of local or external treatment, and even
return after being cut away, shows that back of them is a morbid cause
which must be removed before a cure can result. Just as long as the
pollution continues in the blood, the ulcer remains an open cesspool for tne
deposit of impurities which the circulation throws off. S. S. S. cures Old Sores
by purifying tho blood. It removes every trace of impurity and taint iroriS
the circulation, and thus completely does away with the cause. When
S S. S. has cleansed the blood, the sore begins to heal, and it is not a
surface cure, but the healing process begins at the bottom; soon the dis
charge ceasos, the inflammation leaves, and the place fills m with firm,
healthy flesh. Under the purifying and tonic effects of S. S. S. the system
is built up, and those whose health has been impaired by the drain and
worry of an old sore will be doubly benefited by its use. Book on Sore*
