SQUANDER CASH
Broke Into Star Grocery
Company Monday Night.
Were Caught Thursday.
Ernest Hamilton, aged 13 and Will
Glover, aged 11 years, two white
boys, pleaded guilty to burglary be
fore Recorder Picquet Friday morn
ing. On being questioned, the Ham
ilton boy owned up to stealing sev
eral bicycles. The boys took their
plight very coolly. They were ar
rested in Hamburg Thursday night at
10 o'clock, and carried 'to Aiken by
Deputy Sheriff W. W. Busbee, of Ai
ken county. They were brought to
Augusta Friday morning. The boys
stole between SIBO and $l4O from the
Star Grocery Co. Monday night.
Hamilton made a clean confess* il
He says that on Monday night he
and Will Glover went In the feed
room of the Star Grocery Co. and
hid. The store was closed, and they
looked about to see what they could
find. They discovered a tin box,
containing some money. They pull
ed a peg out of the back door and
made their escape. Going to the
rivnr, they cut the box open, and 'took
the money out.
Here they met Robt. Johnson, a
negro. He told them that the po
lice were looking for them. They
bought a boat from the negro for SB,
to cold, although Mr. Seibels does
not know where it comes from—regis
ters as accurately as a national cash
register, the number of leaves it has
grown by a small eliptica! hole In the
leaf, and as it grows one leaf at a
time, it counts in arithmetical pro
gression, and as it never stops put
ting out leaves unless killed by frost
or otherwise, the leaves soon begin to
resemble mosquito netting almost, so
numerous and crowded are the holes.
Plant Intelligent.
This is a real example of the in
telligence of plant life, and no nature
faking about tt, Mr. Seibels is ex
pecting his plant to register the num
ber of its leaves in elgebraic symbols
within a year or so, as 'the leaves are
always the same size and he is sure
they won t be able to accommodate
any more holes if the work keeps on
without interruption.
A striking and interesting peculiar
ity about Mr. Seibels's plants is that
it began to grow at two ends of a box
about the same time «*._ortly after it
had been killed down by frost, and
the ‘two sides are both putting out
leaves now and are having the most
•ntersstlng arithmetical debate in
their leaf-registering, each one ap
parently believing that it is his dlvin.
right and duty to do the registering
and neither showing the slightest in
clination to give up to the other.
So far as Mr. Seibels is informed
the only other plant of Its kind in Am
erica and possibly in the known world,
is, barring a cutting he has given to his
brother. Mr. E, G. Seibels, living next
door to him. is the celebrated Ames

and also some groceries. The boy’s
story from this point is disconnected.
He says that they "bummed” over
town, buying every thing they liked.
They bought two pistols, which were
found on them at the time of their ar
rest.
Thursday night they met Johnson
again and after giving him $5 he
promised to carry them from Ham
burg up to Jackson avenue in North
Augusta. Mr. Busbee.saw them, and
thinking in strange two white hoys
should be with a negro he arrested
them all. Hamilton becoming fright
ened, then told the whole story. 1
Recorder Picquet, before binding
Robt. Johnson over for accessory after
the fact, gave him a good lecture ant,
told him that he should be beat until
he resembled a checker board, so he
would be a lesson to his people.
Mr. Busbee recovered $55 from the
boys, the boat, and the groceries. The
state authorities will be communi
cated with, and it is very probable
that the boys will he sent to the re
formatory for 5 years, instead of re
maining in jail until the convening of

NEW FOOTBALL
RULES ARE HERE
BALTIMORE.—The official football
rules have ready made their appear
ance, and from now on until the sea
son opens, the middle of next month,
gridiron enthusiasts will have an op
portunity to study the code that is
to govern their favorite sport
Changes In the rules have been
few. Those who control the desti
nies of the game, realizing that the
existing set has proved most satis
factory, have declined to make radical
alterations, and a perusal of the book
will show that the tinkering was
done more with an idea of clarifying
the rules,# praticularly the phrase- I
ology, than with the intention of
changing the style of play that, j
proved so popular last autmun.
Opponents of the forward pass have
been numerous, with the result that
this much mooted uqestion occupied
considerable time of the national com
mittee, but after long deliberation,
'the decision was to leave the rule
practically as it has been in the past.
The only change in the forward pas 3
section was to better designate the
particular players who are eligible to
receive the ball when it is thrown.
Next season a man must be clearly
one yard back of the neutral zone, oi
at the end of the scrimmage zone,
before he will be qualified to partici
pate In the play. This conserva
tive treatment of the clause is con
sidered qufte a victory for the west
ern colleges, which opposed the sug
gestion of the eastern and southern
men to change the play by tossing
the ball directly over the line instead
of five yards, out from where the
ball is snapped.
During the coming campaign a goal
from the field will counc but three
points. The reduction in the value
of this particular play is likely to
meet with the unanimous approval of
all coaches and players except those
who are blessed with a player with a
well-drilled toe. upon whom the ele
ven depends for fts scores. Such a
player as was Evkersall, of Chicago,
of whom the sports down this way
have read much. With the premium
on a goal from the field lessened, thi3
form of scoring will be less popular
and will tend to encourage the rush
ing game.
Last fail it was mandatory for a
defending side, after a touchdown, to
punt out from the twenty-five-yard
line, but in the future it will be op
tional with Rie defenders to either
start with a scrimmage or a kick.
This is inteded to discourage the prac
tice on windy days to punt the ball
over the goal line, forcing the oppos
ing side to kick into a gale and have
a fair catch made, from which an at
tempt at goal from the field might
be made within a reasonable dis
tance. The other changes in the
piles seem to be of only slight im
portance.

MAN LIVED TEN YEARS
DRESSED AS A WOMAN
HIGHFAU..S. —After living ten
years in the garb of a woman, the
fact that “she” is a man was revealed
through a shooting affray. For the
last ten years residents of this sec

The storekeeper disposed of much
merchandise, and the people of the
vicinity showed her due respect and
friendship.
“Sarah” lived alone in an apart
ment near the store. Joe Lewis, a
r.egro, was one of the several hun
dred laborers brought to Hightails by
contractors for the New York water
supply system there, and Joe imme
diately became a customer.
He went into the store after drink
ing heavily, and an altercation fol
lowed. “Sarah” attempted to strike
him with an iron bar, when t.hs cus
tomer pulled a revolver and fired, the
bullet striking the supposed woman
in the head.
The patient was hurried to a hos
pital. Though suffering intensely, an
attempt by the nurses to take off the
garments was opposed, but th e pa
tient was overpowered, and then it
was discovered that "Sarah Long”
