MONDAY, AUGUST ss COOK STOVE AN INCUBATOR From Tlie Chicago News. With the aid of a light shingle fir* in her steel range and a good ther mometer Mrs. Charles E. Winter, No. 7132 South Chicago avenue, tried to make a fine distinction between fried chicken and live chicks—and was successful. A few days ago the hot weather proved too much for one of her hens, which in two days was to hatch out a setting of valuable silver-laced Wy andotte eggs. Just then the outlook for the chicks seemed gloomy, but Mrs. Winter has an inventive mind, and soon conceived the idea of arti ficial incubation. She had no incuba tor, but she did possess a good steel range, which was not ip use in hot weather. Kindling a light fiire with shingles she placed the eggs in a box in the oven, and for two days watched the temperature and regulated it as close to 103 degi'R»j as possible. Her hus band acted as night fireman for the imporvished incubator. One by one the shells were picked open by the little yellow orphans, and now- she has nine new chicks. “It kept us pretty busy,” said Mrs Winter, “but we -were determined to see them hatched out. Mr. Mather used to be a postoffice inspec tor, and made a specialty of running down this class of swindlers. "The greatest fakers for a number of years were 'che people who got out a prospectus of a 'university,’ with a high-sounding tile and made a busi ness of selling ‘fake’ degrees. You would hardly believe that thousands of persons bit at such schemes, but such used to be the case before the government closed up these 'colleges!’ and ‘universities' after they became too numerous and active. "All kinds of 'degrees’ were sold, usually for $lO to $25, and there must be thousands of people who bought ‘sheepskins’ bearing all kinds of bo gus honors. There were some 'fakers' who actually sold 'degrees’ of divinity and through it is hard to believe there were plenty of persons who purchased them. Of late years the business haß practically been suppressed, though occasionally a new ‘college’ starts up.’’ MEET THE McGEOUGHS. F. C. MeGeough was a visitor in Jefferson Sunday evening. Johnnie Fahey was a Sunday vis itor with his cousin, Emmet Me- Geough. Master Leonard MeGeough spent a part of last week with his cousin, Fred Fahey. M. J. Hart and family were Sunday guests at the Mike MeGeough home at the Cross Roads. W. J. McAndrews of lon, was up the line Sunday to attend Miss Mar cella McGeough’s birthday.
