Before a large congregation Sunday night, at the First Baptist church, the pastor. Rev. Ashby Jones, pleased his lis. teners with a learned and interesting dis. course, having for Its theme “Immortal ity.” This was the first of a series of four sermons which Dr. Jones will preach at the First Baptist church on the subject of “Immortality,” and those who heard the minister last night were much impressed. Dr. Jones selected his text from the 16th verse of the 4th chapter of the Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians, which reads: 'Ttut though our outward man is decaying, our inward man is re newed day by day.” Dr. Jones stated that it would be impossible for him to dwell fully with all the questions on the sub ject, but that he proposed to speak upon several of the most important phases of “Immortality,” and thus, as it were, lead the congregation to think for themselves of the great meaning of the word. The sermon was on the “Great Question," and the answers that were given by science and spiritualism and the attain ment brought by faith. RALLY DAY OBSERVED AT REID MEMORIAL Exercises Pleased Many —Sunday School Officers Made Reports. Rally Day was fittingly observed Sun day afternoon at the Reid Memorial (Presbyterian) church, with appropriate and interesting exercises. The fine prog ress of the Sunday school was shown by the excellent report made by Superin tendent E. S. Johnson and the other offi cers of the Sunday school. For the occa sion the officers and teachers of the school had decorated the church ir. autumn style, golden rod and rod leaves being used to advantage. The program for the exercises included songs and reci tations. and an address was made by Mr. E. R. Hook. Mr. Hook’s address was an interesting one. full of good advice to both old and young, and was received with undivided attention. The interesting feature on the program was the contests between various classes both in recita tions and singing. In the recitation con test the junior girls were the winners, and the girls also won in the singing con test. The prize for bringing in the larg gest number of scholars was won by lit tle Miss Agnes Rowland. The musical program was rendered by an orchestra consisting of Miss Merial Rlack. violinist; Vr. Alexander Edelbut flute, and Mis? Hickman at the piano. During the exercises Miss Margaret Hat tie and Mbs Brown were heard In a charming duet. IfOIfDAY, OCTOBER 4 SPECIAL NOTICES Notice.
