"LETTERS m THE PEOPLE
Southern Cordiality
To The Editor of The Herald, Sir:
Kight after the close of that great
and t:rrible war the Northern Bap
tist Missionary Union met in N. Y.
city, a delegation of the leading Bap
tist clergymen of the south were
present.
The rainbow of peace and fraternal
atf etion dominated that gathering.
The brethren from the different
Star s of the south said, “Beloved
brethren let us not recall the past—
that is dead and buried. We never
mend in our views and actions, God
has decided against us; slavery is
dead and we do not desire its resur
tection. now'let us, North and South,
Clasp hands and hearts ror the future
as loyal citizens of the United States.”
The Northern brethren gladly and
warmly indorsed this new basis of
union and with the tears streaming
from all eyes the hand of fellowship
was given our Southern brethren—
n-.ver to be withdrawn!
It is new more than forty years
since that event. The twelveth day
of this prt sent month my wife and I
came as entire strangers to your beau
tiful city. We were met at the R. R.
station by a “King’s Daughters”
matron, who care especially for young
women who come as strangers to the
city. f(he, Mrs. Perry, with the
tordiailty of a sister, introduced us to
widow lady who takes a few board
ers. with the parlor as our bedroom
and also a large broad piazza facing
the south. We felt at home immedi
ately.
As my wife, has suffered severely
with neuralgia and rheumatism at the
North, it seems like paradise to get
to a mild, dry equable climate where
she already finds much relief and
hopes soon to be entirely free from
her northern enemies.
Sunday, the 14th. inst, I worshipped
with the Second Baptist church, I wan
invited to assist in the services and
at the close of the sermon nearly ev
ery man and woman in the audience
came to the platform and gave me
their hands and names and hid us
welcome to the Southland.
They asked me to lead the lnid-wcy-:
prayer meeting, as their pastor was
away.
At the close of this meeting Deacon
Tice,.with his arm about me
about him, marched down the ®aisle
saying before them all “Years ago we
met each other with shot and shell,
now with peace, good will and love
forever!”
Well may we sing the old hymn;
"Blest he the tie that binds, etc.”
Yours for fraternal fellowship for
ever.
(Rev.) T. P. BRIGGS
Augusta, Ga.
UNREASONABLE EXPENSE.
“The old customs are dying out,"
said the sentimentalist. "Nowadays
no young man asks his sweetheart
for a lock of her hair."
“Well,” replied Miss Cayenne, "hair
I costs a great deal more than it used
to.”—Washington Star.
