STRAY THOUGHTS OF A
STROLLER,
Quite a novel society has recen¬
tly been organized in Jesup, I am
told, composed of quite a number
of the young men I was unable
to to learn whether they style
themselves “Knights of ’ est” or
•‘Helpers of Zeke”, but certainly
some such title would be approp¬
riate as their chief aim and ob¬
ject, is to avoid anything like work.
Officers have been elected and auy
member suspected of laboring
making himself presentable is
tried by a court composed of the
other members. Each member
has been assessed 1 ft to buy a lock
which has been plnced on a stable
in the rear of whaley's store and
any poor devil found guilty is
prisoned therein. One member
was > -enfenced to BO minutes im¬
prisonment for cutting an arm fuB
<>f wood for his mother; one to 15
minutes for shelling two ears of
corn to the hogs and another to 2
hours for getting a shave. The lat¬
ter, I hear, narrowly escaped 8
months. One young man men
tinned that he thought of accept¬
ing a position in Florida’and was
almost drummed out of camp, lie
had his funeral preached and, wi/h
much weeping, the others bid him
good-bye—he is still in town
They are now thinking of peti¬
tioning the council to appropriate
« sufficient fund to provide benches
around the old oak and as
warm summer days come on
doubt will ask for ice water
lemonade. Doubtless they will
want sticks and knives fhrnished
too ere long as I think they
whittled ail in sight,
