The ColumVda is still the Gem
f >f jblte Ocean.
The value of a teacher cannot
fre estimated in dollars and cents.
For fifty one years America has
jield the cup. If Capt. B&rr keeps
jiis health, she will continue
hold it.
Recently »oi»e one has , been
brutal as to poison many of
/dogs in Jesup. To say the least
jt, it is an inhuman act in any
to take advantage of poor dum
Ptmaturea by giving them
which contains poison.
The singing convention held
Midway Baptist Church the
Sunday in September proved to
£h© most successful session
held iu Wayne County. All
were highly entertained by
glasses, who came from
sections of the county. A
gumptious dinner was sprend
the people of the community were
descrying of all the nice
gaid about them for the royal
manner in which they entertained
the visitors. The contest, for
place among the classes, was
(contested for, and the leaders
the several classes may, justly feel
proud of their class.
The Jesup School.
The Jesup Public School is
paw offering to Wayne and sur
grounding counties a course of
pmdy hardly equaled and certain¬
ly not surpassed by any other
school in South East Georgia. The
Tfqstpes shoulu congratulate them
pelves ou being ■«> fortunate in
securing the services of snub an
able corps of teachers. No better
falent could have beeu employed
vvibh the funds of so small a place
tjg Jpsup can command.
In addition to showing interest
in the children of the town by *
careful selection of teachers, the
Trustees have demonstrated their
Spirit of enterprise by raising an
puique gum of money for the f
pection of a handsome, up-to-date
Prick building with modern equip¬
ments. which will greatly facil¬
itate the work. This building is
now in course of erection.
In tbo mean time the teachers
are conducting the work in a
first class manner, in the old
building.
Prof. J. N. Peacock, an A. B.
graduate of Emory College, whose
devotion to his chosen profession
—that of the ministry as well as
teaching,—is touchingly beauti¬
ful, and peculiarly fits him for the
position he now holds- Principal
of the school. He is not only inter
gated in the school as a whole but
pach individual a'ready feels that
jn him, though young, they have
a fatherly friend and counselor.
One who feels the awful reeponsi
biltty of having voluntarily as¬
sumed the position of moulding
character and in a measure shap¬
ing the destinies of those placed
under his care.
How vastly important it is that
the youths of our country should
be nurtured by Christian influence!
Therefore we feel that the
ful, exemplary life of Prof.
cock will wield an influence
good upon his pupils which
last long after he has gone to
der his accountability to God
his stewardship.
Prof. Jphnson was educated
the Peabody Normal College.
who make any pretentions to
education know it to be the
pf schools for t{ie preparation
teachers. vv hile Mr. Johnson is
a minister, his life is a bright
ample of quiet unassuming
tility and Christian worth,

Miss Lillian Nichols is an A. B.
and 0. B. graduate of Andrew
Female College. She comes to us
highly recommended and her sweet
winning ways and judicious school
management have already won the
highest admiration from her pupils
and acquaintances. Her influence
in the school room, church, Ep
worth League and entire commu¬
nity is invaluable and we heartily
welcome her among us. She will
give lessons in elocution.
Miss Lila Cain was educated at
the North Georgia
College—the lirst branch of the
State University. She holds a per¬
manent License from the State
School Commissioner. Site
also had the advantage of a
of training in the State Normal
^ {o ^ . g a rich
experience in teaching in all
different grades. Having
nine successful years in her
town is an evidence of her
in this line of work.
The little men and women
her direction have already begun
a systematic study of plants
animals, paper folding and
ting, free hand drawing, und
the near future will begin
modeling and the study of
etrical forms by means of
also the use of a needle by
of sewing cards. She is
lessons in art.
Miss Laura Wilder is
lesson* in music. She lias had
advantage of teachers from abroad
and tho continual growth of
class is sufficient proof that
work is highly gratifying. She is a
young lady of sterling worth and
quite an addition to any commu¬
nity.—A Citizen
IN MEMORIAM.
William mckinley.
London Truth, Sept. 19. <
As a grest wave that, checked in
its advance, , ,
Recoils awhile beyond the breakers
roar,
And then, the mightier for its first
mischance, 4
In ampler volumes surges on the
shore.
So with our grief it is: the waves
of woe
That rose and swelled and then re¬
sought its source,
Returns ugaiu with iv restless flow
In deeper, fuller, more o’erwhehu
ing force.
In that the clouded sky had grown
more bright
As Hope diffused its ever-welcome
ray,
So much the blacker is the sudden
night
That, swiftly falling, has eclipsed
the day.
We’d ceased to think about the
foe with dread—
Had not the sentries passed the
word, “All’s well!”
Yet, ere the echo of their shout
sped,
Death’s flag is flying o’er the
a del!
j,low j g crushing: words are
hard to find:
From the true mourner halting
phrases come
Which aptly voice the anguish of
the mind:
Sorrow is never deeper than when
dumb.
Yet weak and feeble though our
dirge may be
Compnaed with those embittered
tears we shed,
We must assure our kinsmen o’er
the sea
How we unite with them to
their dead.
