from Jesup and presumably an election will be called to fill the
vacancy.
The most important business before the council was the
appointing of officers for the present year and the fixing of the
salaries. Officers were appointed as stated above and the salaries
of all remain the same as last year, with the exception of the
Mayor, who has a raise of Slot).
The question of opening the crossings over the Southern and
the Atlantic Coast Line railways was taken up. The Southern
has agreed ‘ ■ give : crossir ui
to the cemetery. This is a much needed improvement and all will
be glad to know that the Southern has .so willingly agreed to co¬
operate with the town in this matter. The matter of opening
Walnut street crossing, over the track of the Atlantic Coast Line,
which was tabled at the last regular meeting, again came up for
action, and Col. C. C. Tindall, representing the petitioners in this
matter, presented an additional petition of forty-live citizens
asking that the town take action in the matter and open the cross¬
ing. tie stated to the council that it was not the desire of the
citizens to antagonize the railroad company'in any way, and that
it was their desire that the railroads and the town might work in
harmony, but that a great mi j uity of the citizens wanted this
particular crossing and expected their representatives, the mem¬
bers of council, to do the wish of the people. Colonel Tindall
said that he felt sure that the Atlantic Coast Line would consent
to put the crossing in when they were advised of the, people's
requested that the additional .... petition and blither
wishes, and
reques ts of the citizens be forwarded to Division Superintendent
W. 11, Wright, asking that the crossing be place'll as requested.
This suggestion met with the approval of the council and the
Clerk was instructed to forward the matter to the Superintendent
, fu ‘ th( , r actiou in the matter. Mayor Slover stated that
"
he intended to do the right thing in the matter, without rega • to

The matter of revising
.Jesup a city, was referred to the newly elected Town Attorney.
This is quite an imjKirtant matter and means much to the town.
Too much care can not be taken in this important matter. The
Town Attorney will this year doubtless earn his salary of *100,
for besides revising and changing the charter, there are various
legal problems that will perhaps claim the attention of the present
administration.

The now Board of Education of the Town of Jesup organized

bers of the new board are T. t .Slover, Mayor of Jesup and ex
officio member of the board ; W. A. Jennings, elected member
at-large at the town election : F. E. Breen, elected by the Town
Council; Ira M. Itaybon and Peter West berry, hold-over mem¬

Previous to the organizin'; >r» of the new lioard. the old board

The new members were then sworn in. and President I . Carter
ami Hr. S, F, Ellis and A. V,. Strip:..,, Co ontgoin- i miters,
retired.
Practically n6 business wa- transacted by either the old or
new board, other than indicated above. The following resolution
was introduced at the meet » of the old board, just before its
adjournment, but the only a ’ ion taken upon it was to receive it
as information As it refer to a matter of considerable interest
to the citizens and taxpayers, .he resolution is herewith published
in full:
The present Board of E .cation at this, their last meeting
for the year lt»o4, desire to • resent to thdir successors in office
condite exist ' Mended
improvements in tin management and development of the Jesup
Public Schools are s ill incomplete.
At th beginn: g of the present school year we introduced
into the school for i‘ic first time a class of instruction in Book¬
keeping. Penmans!: ;> and Shorthand, under tl\e management of
Prof. O. B. Anderson. This class has, so far, been quite success¬
ful. and we believe if continued will be of great advantage to the
community. The Music class, under tin* management of Miss
Florence ( lahcey.ha - also,we believe, been very successful. Both
of these branches have entailed quite a considerable extra
expense and so far no returns for tuition fees has been received
from them, tin* res pc live teachers receiving for their salaries all
of the fees collected. We therefore recommend that now as both
of these departments ave proven successful and pay the teachers
handsomely, that each of them be required to return to the Board
of Education at least 0 per cent of the total amount collected by
them for tuition fees : ninthly. That these teachers be required to
keep a roll book the .* .me as the other teachers in the school, and
that this roll book returned to the secretary of the Board of
Education, at the er of each month, and he signed by him,
deducting 20per eon' from the total of fees.
We have also be n to some considerable expense in purchas¬
ing opera chairs an ; otherwise fixing up the Auditorium in the
school house, and a this room is intended entirely for school
purposes, we recount end that when permission is given for any
entertainment not connected with the school that sc, t charge be
made for the privile ge of using is same, and tliat a rent of a
certain amount for each eotertainmn ut be required, as well is per¬
mission from the president of the Board of Education to use the
hall for public enter ainment. We further recommend thlt as
the piano used in tin music room by Miss Clanccy has cost the
citizens of the town : go* XT real of money, and as it has been the
custom to allow ditfe ent pm ties giving entertainments in town to
use the piano, there! breaking off the veneering and otherwise
damaging it; that in future this practice be discontinue*.! and no
one be allowed to us the piano only for school purposes, such as
entertainments givi by the pupils or at the opening or closing
exercises of the scln >1.
