A Cheerful View.A
When Mr. Ozlas Ransome, oT i\ 4 >t
terville, saw the bill rendered by the
physician who had ministered to his
ills for three days in New York bo
puckered his lips and gave a shrill
whistle.
“My stars, Ozi, you aren’t going to
give that man any such sum o’ money
as that, now are you?" demanded his
wife with much spirit. “You know
It's extortion—you know”— But to
her amazement Mr. Ransome placed
his hands in his pockets and tipped
back the hotel chair in a position
that indicated peace of mind.
“Now see here, Hudory,” he said,
tranquilly, “I didn’t sense it at first,
but when you consider that in Pottery
ville I’d have to be siek .most six
months to run up a bill of that size,
we've got something to be thankful
for that I was took with that spell
here 'stead of at home.”
Mrs. Ransome pressed her hand to
her forehead. “But supposing you
had been sick only those three days
at home and”— she began with a
bewildered air, finding small comfo’>
in her husband's reasoning, “why
then”—
“We’ve no need to suppose,” said
Mr. Ransome with cheerful firmness.
“We’ve got to take the decrees of
Providence jest as they come, Yon
dwell on the thought of my being
saved six months in bed right in the
heat of summer.”—Youth's Com
oanion.
Lending His Hand.
The occasions on which Professor
Faraway was invited to speak in
public were times of great, anxiety
to his wife, If she succer/ied in
starting him fior the platform Droiy
erly clothed, and with his notes in
his hand, part of her cares vanished,
but not all of them.
One evening her husband was one
of seven distinguished professional
men who were to speak before a
scientific society consisting of men
from all parts of the county.
His speech was clear that Bight,
free from the absent-minded mur
murs which sometimes Interspersed
his discourse, and he seated him¬
self Mrs. Faraway felt that lie had
fully earned the burst of applause—
and then her cheeks crimsoned.
"Did you see anything amusing
about the close of my address, my
dear?” asked the professor, as tlcy
started for home. “It seemed as if
I heard sounds of suggestive merri
ment about me.”
“1 don’t wonder,” aid Mrs. Fara¬
way, who up to that time had main¬
tained the silence of despair, “for
of all the people who applauded your
address, you, with your head In the
air and your chair tilted sidewise
clapped the loudest and longest!”
The Chevron.
“Did you ever notice,” Inquired one
of the old veterans who frequent the
Occidental Hotel lobby, “that the ser¬
geants and corporals of the army
now wear their chevrons with the
point up? It’s only been in late years
that they’ve done so. The marines
always did, hut the army for years
had the points down. It’s only lately
that the chevron has been under¬
stood. The chevron Is Inherited from
the feudal days, and meant a roof.
A man who Jiad rank enough to bo a
non-oemm’lSHloned Affieer was re¬
quired to be a freeholder, a man who
owned the roof over Ills head. The
chevron represented a gabled roof.
The privates owned no home. The
Increase in rank for different grades
of non-commissioned officers was
measured by additional roofs, the
sergeant, for instance, having three
chevrons, against one for the lance
corporal. You’ll find that nearly all
of these military devices have some
origin of historical Interest.”—San
Francisco Chronicle.
AeainMt Rate Reduction.
Atlanta, (in. The recent proposition
of 3. Pope Brown. Chairman of the
Georgia Hallroad Commission, to re
duce the passenger rate In Georgia
from three to two cents per mile was
protested against by the Brotherhood
of Locomotive Engineers, the Order of
Itaihvay Conductors, and unions of the
blacksmiths, machinists and telegraph
ers, boilermakers, railway train men,
carpenters and joiners, clerks and car
men. These orga nizatlons employed an
attorney especially to represent them,
who urged that such a reduction would
work against- the prosperity of the
State and lead to a reduction in the
number of railroad employes as well
us of their wages. The Travelers' Pro-*
tective Association also protested that
a reduction as proposed would result In
fewer trains and poorer service.

Athletes everywhere praise Peruna be¬
cause they, of all men, appreciate the values
of a tonic that dispels physical depression
The vocation of some men may al¬
low them to endure the depressing
feelings incident to spring weather,
but the athlete must never allow h tin¬

He must keep in the “pink of condition"’
all the time.
In order to do this he must avail him¬

rely.
Therefore athletes are especially'
friendly toward Peruna.
Peruna never fails them.
