Heretofore the News hasn’t had much to say about-tbe gubernator ial contest now claiming the attention of the p’ople of Georgia, but we have been carefully viewing and reviewing the situation, for the purpose of arriving at a proper conclusion and correctly, so far at possible, deciding a question that means much to the people of the state. We have been convinced that the lines are strongly drawn be tween the people on the one side, and the machine and ring politicians on tlie other. This Unction will not only meu much for Ihe bat it moans all to the politicians who arc identified with the iiolitical ring of the state, and we, after a careful study of the situation, and watching the tactics of the politicians, have come to the conclusion that the ring is lighting Hoke Smith for ail they are worth and against him they arc making the fight of their lives. Having been Convinced of this fact, we think it a duty that we owe to the people of <*nr county and state to say franklyjthat we believe Hoke Smith to lie the people’s candidate. Whom the politicians fight, the people will bo safe in supporting. The people of Georgia now have the chance of their lives ttfplace in the governor’s chair, a man who will protect their interest and see that the political clan known as the ring vHth its lieutenants in every district and county in the state, aided, abetted and backed by the great power of the corporations, will be a thing of the past, and put out of a job these’ringsters who are lighting set hard to cause his defeat. There is not a bigger, broader or brain¬ ier man in Georgia for the high office of Governor than Hoke Smith, and if the people will only grasp the opportunity that is now offered them and rally to the polls on the 22d day of August and vote for him there will be weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth among the com¬ bines of the ring, paid politicians and corporate powers that have been so long ruling and oppressing the people. We believe it time for the people to have a say so. Never have the people had a candi¬ date more able, and perhaps if they neglect this opportunity, they fldll never have the chance again to put an end the high-handed order' df things that now prevail. While we havn’t anything to say against s'onie of the other candidates in the race, we dir believe that the light is between Hoke Smith and Clark Howell. Clark is the candidate that the ring crowd is trying to elect. Some are working for him di¬ rectly in counties where ho has some strength, but in counties where hc'is not mentioned, as in this county for instance, of course, there rtiust be something done to split the vote that would go to Hoke Srhith. Anything to defeat Hoke Smith, is their cry. 'Phis is no longer a secret. An article was published in the Morning News, Can¬ didate Estill’s paper, sometime ago, written from. Waycross and call¬ ing on the the people in every 'county to combine on the strongest candidate, and let the Howell men, the Estill men, the Russell men and the Jim Smith men, to get together and decide which would stand the best show against llolce and for them to combine in order to defeat hint. W ill the very fact of such openess delude the people? We do not believe it will. Anything to defeat Hoke Smith is now their aim and has been all along. It is safe to say that when these artful tactics are being used by the politicians against a candidate, it is safe to vote for him. Now Judge Russell may be a good man, and probably is. He may be running in his own interest, and probably is. He says so. But he is being used, perhaps uncon¬ sciously in the interest of candidate Howell. Why. Because the votes that he receives in this county will be votes that would have not gone to Howell, but doubtless would have gone to Smith. Estil] may be running his own race, and probably is. lie says so. But he has not the ghost of a show to win. The votes that he gets in this county, or a majority of them would in all probability go to lloke SmitlC Now, it is a known fact that Clark Howell could not carry a single South Georgia county, and it plays mighty well into his hands fAr a man to run as a South Georgia candidate; in this way, the lloke Sbiith vote is divided. But Mr. Estill said in liis speech here at the last term of the court that lie believed that he was the best man in the race, That is his opinion. Why even the North and the South are coming to¬ gether and everything is being done to obliterate all sectional lines in the union of states, while we are down here saying that wo will vote for a man because he is a South Georgian. M e don t want any South and North in Georgia. There is just as much reason in saying that because a candidate for one of our county offices lives in the Northern part of the county, that those in the Southern part will not vote for hint because he is not a South Wayne man. All of this is stuff. Iahs be broad enough to vote for the man who stands a show of winning gainst this ring crowd, and itot throw away a vote ou such a silly proposition, that could only appeal to the prejudice of it man who would vote a ticket from sentiment instead of sense. Russell in giv¬ ing his claim to the office, says that he is the only poor man in the race anti is runni ng as the poor man's candidate. Another sentimen tal and silly proposition. Judge Russell, if he is a poor man, he is certainly getting money from sonVcwhero. Just before this campaign opened m. for Governor, he camassed the state against Chief Justice Simmons for the Chief Justice’s position on the Supreme bench of tiie, State, and it takes a whole lot of mrtnev of money to ride over the entire state of Georgia. If he is a poor man, where is all of this money coming trom No fellow citizen of the good old county of h ayne, the tight is be ween the people on one side and the corporations on the other. Hoke Smith stands for the people, fairly and squarely, t lark How¬ ell is the champion of the other side and the tight is between these two. Lets not Ire led astray by voting for side issues, if you, want tosee the people victorious on the 22nd. of August rally to the ]Kills for lloke Smith, if you are in favor of the State being domina¬ ted by political r^vgs and ring politicians and controlled by tions and combines, come right out like a man and vote for Clark Howell, and don’t do it in a round about way by voting for ono of these lesser lights, that have cropped out, as Mr. Smith says, “Tails to the Kite”, For-in the final wind up it will be either Iloke Smith or Clark Howell, none of the others stand a t shadow of a show, and that they are now seeking to combine against Hoke is proof enough that the people should elect him. They have the power and we believe that Hon. Hoke Smith will be the Next Governor of Georgia, for the people are aroused to the situation, and they will not allow the wool to be pulled over their eyes any longer, by this play to sentiment. We cannot allow this opportunity to slip our grasp to elect a candi date who stands firmly for us. We have come to the al>ove conclu sion after deliberate reflection upon the situation, and every day our opinion is confirmed, Wo know that everything is being done to defeeat the candidate that is relying upon the people to help him smash the ring. The ring candidate is relying upon his political pull and pullers. The city- is well located or - an elevated plain, and is one ol t,|f “ healthiest places in this sec lion ef South Georgia. The nat¬ ural drainage of Jesup is very good, a few well constructed can¬ als and smaller ditches would make the drainage of the city first class. If Jesup ever becomes sickly it will become so from the neglect of the people to keep their premises in good sanitary condi¬ tion. There would be no natural causes. It is a slander on Jesup, for people, to create the impress¬ ion that this is a sickly place. 1 he oi Jesup are laid off at right angles, wido and straight, Ihe pretty shade trees along J os up's streets are beautiful and would make a * paradise for the Dreweds. A little mod¬ street work done in Jesup would make it a very handsome indeed. The railroad facil¬ ities at Jesup are very fine, our people should earnestly work for better freight rates, Jesup has about twenty-two tubes of rail road trackage. 1 here arc five or more good dirt roads that leave Jesup in various directions, these roads must be worked well and some new roads opened up with Jesup as their starting point. We hare a tine temple of justice. We have superior court, county court, court, justice court, mayor's court and if this is not courts for you, we will uncle Sam to create a Feder¬ court. If you need a lawyer, you have good list of learned and able here to select from. get sick at any time, you will just as competent and up doctors at Jesup. to be in the state. Unless you register by the 11th, of August you cannot vote in the coming State and County Primary. If you havn’t registered, do -s* at once. Don't put it off another day. Wanted a candidate for coroner of Wayne county: The only chance for the people to win against the political canaries is to register and vote for Hoke Smith. It is whispered that Col. C. C. Tindall will announce for the Sea ate, upon the platform advocated by lion. Hoke Smith. We predict that before the primary that there will be several im¬ portant changes in the political situation. Some new candidates will enter the field and some who are now in will drop out. Don't pledge yourself to any Candidate hut go to the polls on the pod, and vote for the man most able to fill the office. We favor the measure now before the general assemble to make the term of all county officers four years instead of two. We can get along with about one half of the politics that we now have. \Ye hope to see the political machine smashed by lloke Smith on the 22nd. and these ring politicians with a pull, put out of business Be sure to register for the primary and to goto the polls on # 22nd. and vote. If,you need wagons, bug¬ gies, farm implements, Jesup is the place to lind them, Jesup has good wood and blacksmith shops. our city is noted for it* line board ing houses, restaurants and hotels. 1 f you need a new set of teeth to mastercate your tender western beef, we have doctors that can put you in a set of grinders. If .you need lumber and furniture you will find it manufactured at Jesup. Jesup lias a fine school indeed. We have good churches und Sunday schools and religious privileges in Jesup. The society of Jesup is tiptop. Our beef markets never handle tainted beef. If you want a shave, or have your shoes fixed you can lie accommodated. If you want to keep posted, then take, read and pay for. the two good papers at Jesup. If so¬ da water is wanted then Jesup is head quarters for it. If your wa¬ ter and tea are not cold enough you will find tons of ice made at Jesup. If you do not like the Standard Oil Company’s price of oil, then use electric lights that can he had cheap in Jesup. We have telephone and telegraph com panies. Jesup has two good banks. The climate at Jesup is ideal. There is a rich fertile soil around Jesup well adopted to de versifiod farming. The people of Jesup are progressive and refined. If you want to invest your money wisely come to Jesup. If you want to make money and be nappy to Wayne’s capital to live. If.you get tired of living, we have beautiful burying ground.
