1 think society is considerably to blame
for allowing men to drop so far below the :
proper standard as to indulge in so much
selfishness and intemperance. lint if we
are going to try raising fallen humanity,
we must do it by example; if we want to
teach self-denial, we mnst first practice it
ourselves, ft is not in our power to man
age masculine disposition, only in a kind
and gentle manner. tVe must make ollr
homes so pleasant and attractive that our
friends or relatives will find more comfort
and pleasure there tlinn at places of diaai
| pat ion, and if they wish to indulge in
(what is to them) the luxury of smoking,
: we ought to he only too willing to gratify
I them by allowing them the privilege of
j doing so. Our mission on earth is to do
a 1 the good we. can. If we expect others
[ to try for onr confidence and esteem we
must act in such a manner as to command
| theirs, and if we expect others to sacrifice
their comforting indulgences for our plens
i ur, we certainly ought to be willing to
inconveuiuce ourselves a little for theirs.
Kow, if every one would roily try it
not try to he conspicuously so, but in many
wavs that they can easily add to another's
