The cry ot fire startled the inhabi
tants of this place this morning about
8 o’clock. It was caused by the sut
in a chimny in the hotel burning.

fire, and should one ever get nnd head
way, just as well say "good-bye” to
Rising Fawn, she would be in ashes in
less than two hours.

field, who passe quietly over the river
ot death Sunday night at 12:30 in this
town. The deceased was a daughter
ol Mr. K. A. Hatfield, proprietor of
the Ozark House, and was born duly
the 20th 1870. Miss Detita uasjtaken
sick oil the 3d. inst. She had the ty
phoid fever and pnlimuiaiy disease.
Her inneral was pleached in the 15m,»-
tin church by Rev. J.C. Cmdbp, as
sisted by Rev. V. V. H irlan yesteiday,
aftet which the corpse war taken to
the Ozark cemetery, followed by a large

the conclusion that he had put out the
report. We are sorryjthat it happened
as we have nothjng against him other
wise.
Last night a terrible wind and rain
storm occurred this valley. Com
nienceing at this point, and passing
on southward; trees wore blown across
tlre Alabama Great Southern road at
Eureka, about seven miles,. south of
here, wrecking the Southbound pas
enger train; the fireman, a colored man
named Andrew Brown, was killed, and
the engineer, Mike Frawley, had one
of his shoulders dislocated
and was considerable biased up other
wise. I'he Fireman was thrown out
of tho engine onio the track, the
baggae car passing ovci his body,
killing him instantly, he was from
Atlanta originally aud leaves a wife
and several children. J(o \»ill lie car

by being throwu into a branch was all
that nave him.
The engine was turned completely
around trom the force of the shock,
it was dam age considerable. A pas-

It then struck Clayton Tatum’s
house ou Lookout Mountain, blowing
it down, killing his oldest boy, Tom

hurt. He was up trying to hold the
door shut when the house was blown
away, it blew one of his little boys a
bout fifty yards, but lie leeeived no
serious injuries. After getting her
children together Mrs. Tatum start
ed to Mr.‘Peter Forester’ll, one fourth
of a mile distant in her night clothes
and barefooted, when she arrived there
all the childrens’ clothes weie blown
off Everything they had were blown
away, the furniture, dishes, stove and 1
cooking utensil* were all broken, they
a»e left destitute and should receive
help, and that immediately. |
Alter it lett Mr. Tatum’s it crossed
the mountain into McLemore’s Cove
leaving destruction on every side.
Mr. Oliver Thurman’s house was
blown down, but no one was hurt.
Several houses were blown down in
the Cove, When first seen, the storm,
was about two hundred yards wide
by the time it reached Pigeon Moun
tain it was half a mile wide, and
sweeping everything in its path,it was
traveling in the direction ot Summer
ville, Ga,
