Xt is stated that the Interior Depart -

the Attorney General authorize the
institution ofa suit in the name of tl e
United States to test the validity ol
Bell’s original telephone patent.
'Some people are blaming Gen, Sher
idan and others are blaming Gen.
Crook for not putting an end to the
Apache Indians outrages. The mili
tary authorities aie dispose! to shift
the blame on the hostile Indians
themselves, who persistently refuse to
allow themselves to he caught.
An exchange suggests the plan of
sending all convicts to Alaska to
work m the government mines.
Without reference to over sensitive
humanity, it would be a good wsy to
get rid of the roving, intolerable class
ol "niggers” in the South. Going
to Alaska to freez will be more effect
ual in making them law abibing citi
zens than their chance of going to the
eternal fi.«s.
Hydrophobia was never soprevelent
in Europe as it is now reported.
Numerous ind'ridnals have been
bitten by rabid dogs, and many of
them have suffered a terrible death.
Iu( Amorica an equal! alarm has been
felt, for seldom if ever have so many
case of rabies been reported. The
most severe outbreak has been at
Newark N. J., and the towns in the
immediate neighborhood. Several
persons have been bitten and died,
and grave apprehensions have been
felt for a number more.
A mandamus came up before the
Superior Court of Fulton county
Mondav morning compelling the
Ordinary to hear the contest over the
recent prohibition election. It was
not granted by .Judge Clark on the
same grounds it was refused by the
Ordinary—an insufficiency of legal
reasons. The case will be carried
before the Supreme Court—just where
the “wet” men say they want it, to
test the constitutionality ot tlie pro
hibition statute. The “dry” men
are laughing in their sleeves at the
wav tho “wet” men are grasping at
straws, and consider the matter as
good as finally settled and have no fear
whatever about the lesult before
the Supreme Court.

Speedy Legislation.
There ore two question wliiyli will
be lefore Congress which ought to be
disponed ol as piomptly as possibl e
We refer to the silver question and
the tariff. As long as either of them
bangs fire, business will be unsettled
and capital will remain idle.
dust now the country is struggling
to ially from a painful financial de
pression Congress can do a great
deal to relieve that depression by
taking up the two questions refered to
and settling them one way or the other.
The most important is ttie silver
coinage. That effects our monetary
interests. It has to do with the circu
lating medium. If tl.e coinage of the
silver dollar is to go on, as lias al
ready beeu intimated by timse m a po
sition to know, the sooner it is known
the better.
It is pretty generally believed that
the ts'aff w ill not be disturbed duiinir
the present sitting of Congress but as
lung as an effort is being made to ve
'nee the tariff', business will icmain iu
a’i unsettled condition. —t'omtrncJAi..
