VAL UE OF TACT. The Art of Knowing How to Smooth Ovei Rough Places. Tact might well be called the oil ol society. To know how to smooth over the rough places; to adjust the ruffled feathers; to turn the unfortunate re mark; to asperate the flint and steel, and bring together the oil and wick, thereby producing a pleasant light in stead of spasmodic sparks, is a grace to be cultivated. The grace of tact, like the genius of poetry, can be wooed and won, but is never quite so successful as when it is a birthright. How delight ful it is to meet the people who never showed their angles, and have cushions ready to hide their neighbor’s angles at a moment’s notice! Those persons who bring out the neighbor's tender spot, who drag unfortunate subjects of conversation into the evening circle; persons who make sweeping assertions regardless of the opinion of people pres ent, when nothing is gained by the de claration of opinion, are a nuisance. People who condemn that which is dear as the apple of the eye to another, and whose condemnation counts for nothing because they know nothing about the subject they condemn, w r ould be annoying if they were worth being troubled about. There is a good deal of selfishness and yet a good deal of wisdom in the summing up of a board er as to how he gained advantage over his fellows. He said, speaking of the landlady's baby: “The baby is not handsome, I admit. It cries considerable, I allow. But I can’t make it any handsomer or im prove its temper; therefore I make the best of it. I call it a pretty little darl ing, a sweet little thing. I make ex cuses for the noise it makes by saying all children are so. The other boarders laugh at me, but the laugh is on my side when they are sawing away at tough round steak, and lam luxuriating on tenderloin. It doesn’t take much effort to smooth over the rough places of life.” And it’s worth while trying. It cer tainly shows a wiser spirit to make the rough places easier for ourselves and our neighbors than to make them harder by making them more prominent. It shows a more gracious spirit to endeavor to keep the sharp corners, the weak nesses in a neighbor’s mental make-up out of sight than to bring them into prominence, to the embarrassment of the company and the shame of the of fender. Tact is a grace to be desired and cultivated.— Christian Union. Carrier Pigeons in Europe. Carrier pigeons have long been ah object of attention to the Governments of Germany and France. In this latter country the Minister of War lately di rected a census of the carrier pigeons to be made, when it appeared that at Lille there were 8,000, at Roubaix, 15,- 000; at the little town of Wattrelos, in the Department of the Nord, there are 3,000, partly belonging to private indi viduals, partly to societies w ho endeavor to improve the quality of the birds. Attention is paid to the birds chiefly in the manufacturing districts of the feast and North. In Germany the War De partment has 6,000 pigeons. There are about one hundred associations that have about 15,000 birds. Independently of business messages there are frequent flying matches, and it has been ascer tained that every year some thousands of pigeons are lost in those matches, or at least never arrive at their destinations or return to their homes. —London Times. • » A Thing to Be Avoided. Don’t gush. Avoid extremes, and— gush. Don’t exaggerate the signifi cance of trifles, don’t describe mole hills as mountains. If a raindrop wets your face, don’t say the storm was ter rible; if a person is polite to you, or does you a favor, don’t immediately conclude that he adores you and would die for you; if, on the other hand, he seems somewhat uneffusive, don’t infer that he hates and would like to kill you. Appreciate all good things, but don’t sentimentalize over them. Don’t run when walking would be just as well, and probably better; and don’t just pour yourself out when, perhaps, it might be just as well to contain your self. Gush is doubtless enjoyed by an individual here and there w T ho is him self effusive, but by the world in gen eral it is considered as one of the things to be endured with other afflictions.— Watchman. He refers to the entire Western and Southern country to bear him testimony to the truth of the assertion that in no caso whatever will it fail to cure if tho directions are strictly followed and carried out In a great many cases a single dose has been sufficient for a cure, and whole families have been cured by a single bottle, with a per fect restoration of the general health. It is, however, prudent and in every case more cer tain to cure, if its use is continued in smaller doses lor a week or two after the disease has been checked, more especially in difficult and long-standing cases. Usually this medicine will not require any aid to keep the bowels in good order. Many times women call upon their family physicians, one with dyspepsia, another with palpitation, another with backache, or nervousness, another with pain here and there, and in this way they all present alike to themselves and their easy-going and indifferent doctor, separate and distinct diseases, for which he prescribes his pills and potions, assuming them to be such, when, in reality, they arc all symptoms caused by some uterine disorder, while the physician is ignorant of the cause of suffering, he encourages his practice until large bills are made, when the suffering patient is no better, but probably worse for the delay, treatment, and other complications made. A proper medicine directed to the cause would perhaps have entirely removed the disease, thereby instituting comfort instead of prolonged misery. m ~ M ~ * n,...., . “Female Weakness ” Cnred.—Mi’s.
