THE CHINESE GODS.
Hundreds of Idols to be Seen in the Tem
ples of Canton.
In and near Canton are 125 temples.
Every storekeeper lias a picture of Con
fucius or of some other sage conspicu
ously placed on the rear wall of his
store. At these home altars incense is
daily burned. The temples are usually
filthy. A crowd of fortune-tellers,
gamblers, sellers of small wares and
beggars infest the popular places. One
of the temples has five hundred life
size genii, all in a sitting posture, and
each with a different expression or with
hands in a peeuliar position. One wise
man had whiskers and a decidedly
European cast of countenance. Upon
asking what god he was I was told that
it was Marco Polo.
It was my first interview with Mark,
and he seemed to be pleased at meeting
me. At least a benign smile rested on
his wooden face. Patience has its re
ward. Marco was accused of lying be
cause he told of the customs of the
orient, but now he is enrolled among
the Buddhas and sits composedly
among those five hundred gilded idols.
The god who holds up the moon was
shown to me. The left arm is much
larger than the other.
There is also a temple, a Tartar
temple, I think, devoted to the five
genii who come to the city on rams,
bearing gifts of grain to the city. The
rams were turned to stone and are
there to convince the obstinate —five
rough-looking stones, about as large as
a man’s head, showing that the rams
were condensed when transformed.
There is also a large bell here with a
piece knocked out of the bottom. It
was a tradition that whenever that bell
should sound calamity would fall upon
the city; and when the English and
French besieged the city in 18(57 one of
their cannon-balls struck the bell,
broke off a piece, and caused it to
sound.
In sight of this temple is a tower
built by the Mohammedans in the
eleventh century. The next object of
interest was the flowery pagoda, ten
stories high, about twenty feet in
diameter, and, with a great amount of
carving on it.— Cor. San Francisco

Much has been written and said about
how to make home happy. Tho moralist
and the preacher have hackneyed this
theme until it would seem nothing more re
mained to be said. But the philosophers
have gone far out of their way to account
for the prevalence of ill-assorted couples
and unhappy homes, and have over-looked
the chief cause. Most of the unhappiness
of married life can bo traced directly to
those functional derangements to which
women are subject. In nine cases out of
ten the irritable, dissatisfied and unhappy
wife is a sufferer from some “ female com
plaint.” A trial of Dr. Pierce’s Favorite
Prescription will produce more domestic
happiness than a million sermons or philo
sophical treatises. It cures all those pe
culiar weaknesses and ailments incident to
women. It is tho only medicine sold by
druggists, under a positive guarantee from

The following words, in praise of Du. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription as a remeda for those delicate diseases and weak*
nesses peculiar to women, must be of interest to every sufferer from such maladies. Tw.-y are fair samples of the spontaneous
expressions with which thousands give utterance to their sense of gratitude for the inestimable boon of health which has been
restored to them by the use of this world-famed medicine.
_ John E. Sugar, of Millenbech, Va., writes:
Cs? § My wife had been suffering for two or three
M. V# years with female weakness, and had paid
Tiinmuu iiuiu out on .? lum d>'ed dollars to physicians with
-IHR OWN fIWAy ? ut relief. She took Dr. Pierce's Favorite
__ Prescription and it did her more good than
, , all the medicine given to her by the physi
cians during the three years they had been practicing upon her.”

TREATING THE WRONG DISEASE.
M an vt' mt ‘8 w Oßlen call on their family physicians, suffering, as they imagine, one from dyspepsia, another from heart disease,
anotner irom liver or kidney disease, another from nervous exhaustion or prostration, another with pain here or there, and in
tms way they all present alike to themselves and their easy-going and indifferent, or over-busy doctor, separate and distinct, diseases,
IOr r. k !>• i PDSe™* td q pills and potions, assuming them to be such, when, in reality, they are all only symptoms caused by some
womb disorder. The physician, ignorant of the cause of suffering, encourages his practice until large bills are made. The suffering
patient gets no better, but probably worse by reason of the delay, wrong treatment and consequent complications. A proper medicine,
like L)r. Fierce s Favorite Prescription, directed tn the cause would have entirely removed the disease, thereby dispelling ail those
iistressing symptoms, and instituting comfort instead of prolonged misery.
Mrs. E. F. An roan, of No. 71 Lexington St.,
3 M O ANS I K<,s< says: “ Five years ago 1
r § was a dreadful sufferer from uterine troubles.
lAILED I exhausted the skill of three phy
ammsicians, I was completely discouraged, and so
weak I could with difficulty cross the room
alone. I began taking Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription and
using the local treatment recommended in his ‘Common Sense
Medical Adviser.’ I pommenced to Improve at once. In three
months I was perfectly cured, and have had no trouble since. I
wrote a letter to my. family paper, briefly mentioning bow my
health had been restored, and offering to send the full particulars
to any one writing me for them, and enclosing a stam)iai-en
velope for reply. I have received over four hundred letters.
In reply, I have described my case and the treatment used,
and nave earnestly advised them to ‘do likewise.’ From a great
many I have received second letters of thanks, stating that they
had commenced the use of ‘ Favorite Prescription,’ had sent the
81.50 required for the ‘ Medical Adviser,’ and had applied the
local treatment so fully and plainly laid down therein, and were
much better already.”
THE OUTGROWTH OF A VAST EXPERIENCE.
The treatment of many thousands of eases
of those chronic weaknesses and distressing
ailments peeuliar to females, at the Invalids’
Hotel and Surgical Institute, Buffalo, N. Y.,
has afforded a vast experience in nicely
adapting and thoroughly testing remedies
for the cure of woman's peculiar maladies.
Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription
is the outgrowth, or result, of this great
and valuable experience. Thousands of
testimonials, received from patients and
from physicians who have tested it in the
more aggravated and obstinate eases which
had baffled their skill, prove it to be the
most wonderful remedy ever devised for
the relief and cure of suffering women. It
is not recommended as a “ cure-all.” but
as a most perfect Specific for woman’s
peculiar ailments.
As a powerful, invigorating tonic,
it imparts strength to the whole system,
and to the uterus, or womb and its ap
pendages. in particular. For overworked,
‘‘worn-out,” “run-down,” debilitated teach
ers. milliners, dressmakers, seamstresses,
“shop-girls,” housekeepers, nursing moth
ers, ann feeble women generally, Dr.
Pierce’s Favorite Prescription is the’ great
est earthly boon, being unequalled as an
appe.tizing eordiai and restorative tonic. I;

persuaded me to try your medicines, which I was loath to do,
because I was prejudiced against them, and the doctors said
they would do me no good. I finally told my husband that if
he would get me some of your medicines, I would try them
