Mormonsin the South.
e :
- The Mormon elders continue to
carry on their work of proselytiem
in those puires of the southern
gtates where there is great illitera
cy. 4t is stated that there are now
200 of them st work—loo in Alaba
bama and 100 in purts of Geogia
Tennessen. They me becoming
bold, are beginning to ask,”as
Tweed did when he was plundeing
New York, *What are you going to
do about it?” ;
| Thisiz the question—whiit are
!we of Georgia, Alabama and Tenn
lessee going to do about it? There
iis no law that will reach the case,
The constitution stands in the way,
and state and national legislators
have been unable to getv around it.
We are powerless, except we resort
to means outside of the law,
This. then, is the situation: On
the one hand. hundreds of families
are being broken up, almost entire
neighborhoods are being depopula
ted, and pernicious ideas are being
inculcated —for no matter whatthe
‘Mormon elders say. polygamy is a
part of Mormonism, and they be
lteve in and try to teach it. The
converts that they send to Utah,
Arizona and Idaho sometimes
namber several hundrea at a time.
More than 500 have been sent from
four counties 1n Alabama, and 200
‘more will be sent in a few months.
On the other hand, any effectual
interference with the work of the
elders must be such as would sub
jeotus to the charge oflawless
ness. :
There is plainly no present relief,
unless, as has been said, we disre
card law, and the gravity of the sit
uation has sometimes seemed to
justify the people 1n doing that.
There is future relief, however, and
it lies in education. The elders
don’t-attempt to prosecute their
work in educated communities,
When the civilizing influences of
education shall be feit by the be
nighted people, among whom these
emissaries find their vietims, there
will be no fieldin the south fiom
which to build up the Mormon
cburch. Every effort, therefore,
should be made to improve the
publiz school system.
The dese population of China,
the absence of railroads and eans
ot cheap transportation, and the
occasionadl jcrop failures render it
peculiarly liable to famine. A terri
ble famine is now raging in the
northeastern provinces. A million
and a half ol people are staiving,
owing to continuous rains and
floods on the one hang, and pro
tracted drouth on the other, which
haue destroyed the crops. Th« de
tails of the fearful calamity are
vouched tor by our own official
missionarigs. A committee has been
organized m New York to raise
subreriptions, The noney raised
will be promptly sent to China by
canle message free of charge, and
wi!l reach the suffering Chinese by
the hands of the missionaries of all
denominations, and within vhree or
four weeks from the date ot Its be
stowal here. As the appeal savs,
“When it is borne in miad that so
small a sum as five dollars will
suffice to support a Chinese {amily
ot five or six persons for a month,
or even longer, one feils that there
is much hfe-giving might in Chinn
for even a small pittance like the
widow’s mite.” ‘ s

Several persons state that they
have met the ghosts, and one man
reports that an airy form materi
alized in his kitchen and asked for
something to eat. It melted into
mist when approached, but reap
peared, still hungry, when he went
away. On a policeman being sum
moned, the apparition vanished
and did not again return.
