DWW coMPETINONL G 0 THE COPPER CENT. A Memphis bankersaid the other day that he believed one reagon why the northern people were better off financially as a rule than the gouthern people was because they used copper cents in their business transactions. In other words, the northern peo ple realize that one cent saved here and another saved there will event ually amount to a considerable sum, and in learning to take care of the cents they have learned to take care of the dollars also. The copper cent is used in many of the larger cities of the south, but one is hard ly ever seen in the smaller cities and in the towns and villages. The truth is that the southern people are inclined to be extravagant. In the “good old times” about which we hear so much, they did not find it necessary to save the cents, and the lesson of economy has been a hard one for them to learn. It has been said, and no doubt with some truth, that a very good living could be gotten out of what the southern people throw away. The use of coppers is becoming more general in the gouth, however, and it is significant that at the same time the southern people are becoming more prosperous. The mere saving of coppers will not bring wealth, but the economy in both small and large matters that such a practice encourages is very valnable. In European countries coins of the value of half a cent are in common use, and it is said that a petition will pe presented to congress at the next session to authorize the coin age of half cents in this country. There are many people whose profits are made up of small fractions, and it is chiefly in their interest that the petition will be presented.
