Fully 3,000 people were in attendance. The secretary of the navy, on Saturday, awarded a contract to William E. Cramp & Sons, of Philadelphia, for the con struction of two coast line battle ships. The Spanish government intends to enter negotiations with the United States government for reciprocal concessions touching Cuban and American products. Thousands of Mother of pearl workers are camping in Galizynburg forest, near Vienna, Austria, in a destitute condition. Several funds have been started for their relief. ! The trustees of the Peabody fund held the closing session of their annual meet ing at Fifth avenue hotel, New York, Thursday, and re-elected the officers of the past year. The two priests who were detained at Philadelpn& under the provisions of the contract labor law have been released on making affidavit that they came to this country as lecturers. The annual dinner of the Iron and Steel Institute took place at Delmonico’s, in New York, Thursday night. Two hun dred and fifty members of British and American institutes dined. A special from Johnburg, Pa., says: At 5 o’clock Saturday morning fire broke out, which destroyed the business portion of the town. The loss is about $40,000. Natural gas started the fire. The Mississippi river commission fin ished its labors in New York on last Sat day night, after reapportioning over $3,000,000 for improvements in the lower Mississippi and its tributaries. A treaty has been signed by Germany and Zanzibar, relative to coasting trade along the east coast of Africa. The Ger man government pays the sultan of Zan zibar four million marks for the conces gion. Ex-President Cleveland has aceepted an invitation to be present at the Thur man baaquet, to be given on November 12th, under the auspices of the Thurman club. Mr. Thurmgn will be seventy seven years old on that date, @ Intelligence received at Paris Saturday from Noumea, New Caledonia, states that sixty leper convicts confined in the penal establishment there made their escape last June. The authorities are unable to discover their whereabouts. Ex-Governor Philip Francis Thomas, of Maryland, who was secretary of the treasury under President Buchanan, and who Las held nearly every office in the gift of the people of Maryland, died at Baltimore Thursday night, aged eighty years. The &Bt. James Gazelte (London) of Thursday printed an article commenting in a sneering manner upon the movement in America to establish a fund for the re lief of the famine sufferers in Ireland. It says the movement is simply a dodge to secure the Irish vote. The New York custom house was kept open until midnight Saturday night, 1n order to give merchants an opportunity to enter their importations under the present tariff rates, as only one day was left them before the new law went into effect. A cotton-picking machine has been in vented that the inventor—A. Campbell, of Chicago—says will save 90 per cent. in the cost of picking. A company for the manufacture of the machines has been incorporated under the laws of Illi nois, with §5,000,000 capital. Thestatement prepared by the treasury department shows that there was a net increase of $62,009,767 in circulation during the month of September, and a net decrease of $10,863,394 in money and pullion in the treasury. More than half the increase in circulation was in gold certiflcates. A Dublin dispatch says: The Lim erick Corporation, at a meeting Thurs day, adopted resolutions censuring the government for the recent Tipperary ar rests. The meeting was attended with stormy scenes. The members who op posed the reeolution were threatened with ejection. . A London dispatch of Thursday says: The National Gas Woriers’ Union has demanded that the London Gaslight and Coke Company employ only union men. A deputation from the-union will wait upon the managers of the company. The company has a capital of £12,000,000, and employs 11,000 men. The Eondon Chamber of Commerce recently represerited to the United States consul-general at London that this was unfair information to ask, and made a vigorous protest. The directors of the London Gas Light and Coke Company continue their prepar ation to fiuard against a stoppage of their works in consequence of possible trouble between them and their cm ployes, Barracks have been built at Beckton to shelter the mnon-union em ployes, and cavalry and _infantry may be necessary to call upon to protect the workmen., The company has enough coal stored to meet its requirements for ten weeks. Great excitement was caused among the 10,060 people who attended the county fair at Portland, Ind., Friday, by a report that many persons were dying from the effects of drinking lemonade at one of the booths, One family of seven persons were taken home in an uncon scious condition, and fully thirty more received medical assistance. No deaths have yet been reported, but several per sons are in a critical condition. The trouble was caused by the extracts used. A Washington dispatch of Saturday says: Captain James F. White, super intendent of the sixth division of the railway mail service, headquarters at Chicago, has been appointed general su perintendent of the railway’ mail service at Washington, vice J. Lowrie Bell, re cently appointed second assistant post master general. Lewis L. Troy, assistant superintendent of the sixth division, has been appointed superintendent of that division in the place of White. SYMPATHY FOR IRELAND. A ROUSING MEETING IN INDIANAPOLIS IN BEHALF OF THE IRISIL CAUSE. Tomlingon hall, at Indianapolis, which seats 6,000 people, was packed Thursday night by friends of the Irish cause, whe had assembled to express their senti ments regarding the recent arrests of Messrs. Dillon and O'Brien, and the con duct of their trial at Tipperary. Mayor Sullivan presided, and made a stirring appeal in behalf of Ireland. Rev. J. 8. Jenks, of St. Paul, Minn., Hon, William H. English, Judge N. B, Taylor and other prominent speakers ad dressed the meeting. A long series of resolutions were adopted, among them one, which, after denouncing Balfour and Salisbury, pledged the meeting, by all honorable n:eans at our command, to sustain _ the Irish people in that great moral struggle until it culminated in a glorious achievement of home rule for Ireland. CONGRESS ADJOURNS. THE FIRST SESSION OF THE FIFTY-FIRST CONGRESS CLOSES. The first session of the fifty-first con gress is no more, At 6 o’clock Wednes: day afternoon, after ten months of turbu lent wrangling and riotous partisanship it breathed its last. The closing hours of congress were uneventful, save in the house. The senate dragged along sleepi ly, passing private bills and then went into executive session. The president and his cabinet came to the capitol, and occupied the president’s room, the first time it has been occupied since Arthur’s administration, Mr. Uleveland always re maining at the white house. Mr. Harri son wanted to be on hand to sign the bills as rapidly as they passed during the day. The first to receive his signaturg was the tariff bill. FIFTEEN MILLIONS IN BONDS BEFORE THE COURTS FOR AD JUDICATION. A San Antonio dispatch says: The case of the Farmers’ Loan and Trust Company against the International and Great Northern Railway Company for the fore closure of second mortgage bonds issued by the said railway company, and in ac cordance with a clause in the mortgage authorizing the foreclosure on the failure of the payment of the semi-annual inter est, was called at Tyler, Texas, Friday. The legality of the gonds, amounting to $15,000,000, is to be decided. ' .
