Black Teak in Africa. Various writers who have visited Africa attest the enormous wealth of the forests of the country, which seem to abound in valuable hardwoods. Among other woods a recent writer mentioned the African black teak. To quote his language: “The black teak is an entirely new wood. It has the full appearance of teak in tree, leaf and bark, grain or growth. But it is nearly a dull black color. and splits just about the same a: the yellow teak. What T have seen of it has been in small trees, but I am told that there are large forests of it up the Kasiah river, mostly trees in size of from 12 te 20 inches over the stumps, ranging from 20 to 60 feet to first limbs. This is the timber chosen by the natives for bows and arrows, spear handles, paddles and anything where a good tough piece 18 needed. I consider it a better timber for spokes, felloes, handles, etc., thanthe best American hickory or oak, or white ash, as it is very hard when green, dries still harder, and is not much of a timber to warp. I have used it on axe-handles and other places for‘over a year, and it has proved far better than the best im ported split.axe and shovel handles. It 1s very springy, and that is why it is used for bows and spear handles.” No Fourth of July celebration was held by the Ameiricans resident in St. Peters burg, for the simple but all-sufficient reason that the authorities peremptorily refused to allow any demonstration of the kind. Catarrh can never be cured b{ aintments and other local applications, but there is one remedy that can permanently remove the cause, It has cured cases where the uischarge was 80 copious and .offensive that it felt as if the whole head was a mass of corruption. Other cases indicated by an irresistible desire to hawk and SYR' the phlegm collecting in a tough mass behind the soft palate. In other cases where the matter dried up in such large lumps as to fairly elose up the nostrils and pre vent nasal respiration. In other cases where the hreuth was 8o offensively revolting and fetid that the person became a disgusting object in society. Other cases wherein complaint was made of a distressful feeling above and be tween the eyes and where the sense of smell wvas entirely lost. Other cases where the drop pings fell into the throat and the voice became husky, and caused a troublesome cough. Oh ! you want to know the name of the medicine? GREELY, 715 Washington Street, Boston, Axle Grease a Universal Panacea. One afternoon, says the Kansas City Star, a big Osage Indian named The- Eagle-Who-Won’t-Fly went into the trader’s store at Grey Horse and inform ed Agent Florer that hg‘was ¢tgick leap.” He wanted medicine and said the man ifestations were of the stomach and said he felt very bad. Florer had no medi cine, but gave the bronze individual a bot tle of pepper-sauce and advised copious draughts thereof, the same to be inclusive of the peppers with which the flask was furnished, The-Eagle-Who-Won't-Fly took the bottle and sat hopefully down on a shoe box to its consumption. In ten mimutes 1t was gone. In half anhour the Eagle was after Florer again. The medicine did him no good. He felt no change. The medicine was not ‘‘bad” enough. Piled up back of the store were a number of boxes of axle grease which was 8o strong and rancid that to cross to leeward of them was a desperate chance: Florer took the Eagle and, giving him a splinter of shingle, told him to help hin self, ¢‘As medicine,” said Florer, ‘‘it's way out of sight and you take lots of it. It'll cure you or have you in the hands of an assignee before night.” The Eagie was deeply grateful to be left with so much good medicine and deyoured half of a box at the first sitting. Then he thanked Florer and went away. That afternoon the Eagle sent over one of his squaws to buy five boxes. Along came two or three others, all after axle grease. Before 9 o’clock that evening every Indian at Grey Horse came around for a box of the ¢‘big medicine.” Florer had a run on rancid axle grease that cleaned him out of stock. Itisnmow a popular medica ment with the Osages. Causes of Death. Shakespeare says: ¢‘Men have died and worms have eaten them, but not for love.” Some one else says very few men die of age. Death is the: result. of dis appointment, personal, mental or bodily toil, ‘or accident. We often sec the strong man cut down suddenly, and the invalid living his four-score and ten. The fact is that the strong man uses up his strength, and the weak one nurses the little given him. The passions cer tainly shorten life, and sometimes sud denly end it. ‘‘Choked” with passion is very often not an exaggeration. The lower animeals which live temperate lives have their prescribed term of years. The horse lives twenty-five years, the ox fif teen or twenty, the hog ten or twelve, the rabbii eight or nine, the guinea-pig six or seven. 'The numbers all bear pro portion to the time the animal takes to grow its full size. Man is the only animal that seldom comes up to the average. He ought to live one hundred years, according to the physiological law, for five times twenty arc one hundred, but he scarcely reaches an average of four times the growing period. Tosum ifall up, man is the most hard-working and laborious of animals, also the most irregular and intemperate. -Heis irritable, and often wears out, or is consumed by the fire of his own reflections.—7"%e Ledger. e R ) Quneen Vietoriu's First Love. The name of the late Lord Illen borough was, says the New York Sun, in his youth associated with that of Queen, then Princess, Victoria. It was a matter of common rumor that the two young people were devoted to each other, and that the youthful Queen in sisted that she should choose him as her consort. But reasons of state prevailed over love, and young Ellenborough was given a commission in the army, and went to India, where he distinguished himself. His romantic love affair led to the writing of a ballad, which used tobe sung in the drawing rooms of * Great Britain, the first verse of which was as follows: ; I'll hang my harp on a willow tree, I'l] off to the wars agzinj. A ,lp,aaceful home has no charms for me, he battlefield no pain; The lady Ilove will soon be a bride, With a diadem on her brow. O why did she flatter my boyish pride? She's going to leave me now. ——— S ———— Consumption of Opiates. Said a well known druggist to me the other day: “You would be astonished were you to know the exact amount of morphine and opium sold in one week by the local druggists.. The consump tion of these drugs is simply enormous, and the results appalling. - We never have less than a half dozen calls for the poison in one day. On Saturday nights one of our clerksis kept busy attending to nothing but the filling of orders for opium, morphine in liquid and powdercd state, and the poisonous extract of the poppy plant in every form. The colored people are becoming the largest consum ers of the drugs, and on the night men tioned half of the orders are brought in by color;d children.”— Louisville Post. i SRR s et The Stick of Wood in the Barrel. A correspondent of the- Practical Mechanic writes that he has tried the ex periment which has been writtea about in the press of late of inserting a stick of wood in a barrel or. hogshead -of water to prevent its bursting when frozen, and has found it an effective remedy. He says he had no faith 1n the success of the experment, but decided to risk one bar rel, £o inserted a stick about four by three inches and let the barrel freeze up golid, and much to his surprise ‘the bar rel wae unmnjured, the ice bulging up around the stick, but not a stave or scc tion of the head started. A Universal Wish. Tranquility is the wish of all; the good, while pursuing the track of virtue; the great, while following the star of glory, and the little, while creeping in the styes of dissipation, sigh for tranquility, and make it the great object which they ultimately hope to attain. How anxious does the sailor, when toss ed on tempestuous seas, cast his eycs over the foaming billows, and antici pate the calm security he hopes to enjoy when he reaches the wished-for shore. Even kings grow weary of their splendid slavery, and nobles sicken under increas ing dignities. All, in fact, fecl less de light in the actual enjoyment of worldly pursuits, however great and honorable they may be, than in the idea of their being able to relinquish them and retire to e Some calm, sequestered spot, & The world forgetting, by the world forgot, Tur following written definition of the word ‘‘bachelor” was handed in Dby a tifth grade boy: ‘‘A bachelor is a man who has no wife, nor wants no wife, nor can't get no wife.” Beware ot Ointments tor Catarrh Thar Conta:n Mercury, A< mercury wiil surely destroy the sense of smell and “completely derange the whole sys tem when entering it th u‘fh the mucous sur faces.
