Our goid supplies are slipping away to Europe in spite of favorable trade balances. The integrity of the cur rency itself is maintained only by | repeated rosort to a costly make shift. It is ! time for them to put aside their factional wi'anglings and do the duty that lies so near them. There is need of a leader with a strong hand. There is need of common sense and a due recognition of the country’s claim for relief. London, January 15. —The Dig lake colliery, at Hauly, was 110 • ml this morning while about 240 miners ware at work. The water came from a part of the mine which had been closed for some time. a It swept through the workings with tremendous force, carrying with it timbers, cars and tools. Thu men nearest the shafts weie rescued and the others fled to re mote workings where they would be above the level of the flow. It is thought that 140 of the men were saved and that the rest were drowned. This is only gusss work, however. It may be great deal worse than any ona may imagin . BESIEGED BY DERVISHES Italian Garrison at Kassala Run Into the Fort. Rom*, January 15. —Private advices from Massowah say an overwhelming force of dervishes is besieging ths Italian garrison at Nnssala. The garrison, which is 1,500 strong, recently made a sortie, but the soldiers were re pu’sed and driven behind the fort vorks. General Barterieri has col lected all the troops available ana started from Keren to relieve the beleaguered garrison.
