Omaha, Nt>b.,July 18. —The po lice and the Board t>f Health are investigaUnjpthe riven instances re lative to the death of Miss Julia R- McDona d, who died of catarrh of the bowels at her home at 1804 Farnam street, Monday. The death certificate is signed by J. P. Mc- Donald, a brother of the deceased. Mrs. Lathrop, of 2823 Leavenworth street, a well known Christian Scientist, was seen, and from her was ascertained that Miss McDon ald was under the “absent treat ment” method adopted by students of ‘ Christian science.” Mrs. La throp also treated the deceased. Mrs La hrop said there was noth ing unusual about the woman’s death ; that everything that could be done to save her life had been resorted to, and, while failure had resulted, there was no reason to condemn Christian science. Miss McDonald underwent treatment at the hands of a Chicago faith-cure doctor. Mrs. Lathrop said, when asked as to what ‘‘absent treat ment” was, that it was a course of treatment by silent prayer and thought administered from a dis tance. For instance, in the case of Miss McDonald the patient was taught to have faith and believe that she was no’sick. The funeral of Miss McDonald occurred yesterday under the au spices of the Christain Sience So ciety, and the remains were sent co Nevada, lowa, for burial. TROULE IN BULGARIA. Intense Excitement Caused by the Assault Upon Stambouloff Constantinople, July 18.—The attempted assassination of ex-Pre mier Stambouloff at Sofia, Bulga ria, has cau-ed a great sensation here and serious events in Bulgaria are looked forward to. In fact it is predicted that the whole Eastern question will be re-opened. VERY CRUEL. Kansas City, Mo., July 18.— Miss Sarah Meade, a former school teachea of Greenwich, Conn., who met Dr. J. L. Walker, of Des Moines, lowa, in this city by ap pcintmenton June 5, and was mar ried to him on the same day in Kansas City, has discovered, it is said, that her husband is false, and that she has been the victim of most cruel deception. Her hus band, it is alleged, has deserted her, and, worse still, he has taken her gold watch and $1,200 in mon ey, leaving her more than 1,500 miles from home with only $lO. Miss Meade and Dr. Walker met at an Eat tern watering place in the summer of 1803. On the day following the wed ding in Kansas C ty, Kan., Dr. and Mrs. Walker went to Hutchinson, Kan., to spend a week. Returning to Kansas City, Dr. Walker told his wife he had been offered a fine practice by a Dr. Snell in this city for $1,200 in cash, and he decided to accept it. She gave him S6OO and wrote her sister in Connecti cut for S6OO more. The money ar rived July Ist, and on the morning of July 2nd, while Mrs. Walker was house hunting in Kansas City, Kan, the doctor carted his baggage off to the tlniou station and left the city, since which time nothing has been heard of him. Rev. James G. Daugherty, the Kanaaa City minister who perform - cd the ceremony, when told her troubles conbluded that she had been the victim of an unconscious able scamp, and said today that Walker or whoever he might be qad si in pl v relieved Miss Meade of $3,100. a part of the money having been secured fr m her ostensibly to pay off a mortgage on his prop erty in Des Moines. $2.00 ROME TO LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN AND RETURN. Corbett. Miss Marie King, a member of the dramatic company with which Corbett travelled, continued her testimony as to the relations be. tween Corbett and the woman known as Vera. Miss King related instances of adisp'ayof affection as the company were travellin in a railway car. At Corning, 0., she had seen upon the hotel register the entry “J J. Corbett and wife,” It was agreed between counsel that if the referee reports favor ably to the paintiff, alimony should be fixed at SIOO a week. Ad journment until July 26th was then taken in order that testimony might be obtained in the West. GALE IN MICHIGAN. Wind Blew Seventy Miles an Hour, Ruining Much Fruit. Detroit, July 18. —Specials to the News from St. Joseph, Benton Harbor and other points in the fruit belt of Western Michigan, re port a terrific gale early this morn ing, the wind reaching a velocity of 70 miles an hour. Many small buildings and forests and fruit trees were blown down and thousands of bushels of apples pears, and peaches blown from the trees. A heavy sea is running and much anxiety is felt for small boats. A sharp lookout is being kept along the shore, TOBACCOWORKS ON FIRE Big Blaze in Cincinnati Thai Will Cause Heavy Loss. Cincinnati, July 18. —2 :30 p. in. —The large tobacco works of Sea mon & Co , No. 45 Front g reet, are burning, and the fire is likely to spread to other ware houses in that vacinity. “Not True.” Says Cleveland. Buzzard’s Bay. Mass., July 18.— President Cleveland said to the representative ’of the Associated Press today that the report that he contemplated a trip to the Adiron dack mountains shortly and would be there at the same time as ex-Pres ident Harrison was incorrect He said nothing is further fron hie thoughts than such a trip ai d that he expects to remain at Gray Gables for some little time.
