After a hot chase this morning the police■ ran in Jim Holt and 'ohn Mashall, two s'alwart youg negroes, who are said to be wanted at Summerville, for robbery, Mrs Bruce Harris is visiting relatives in Columbiana Ala—will return in three weeks and resume her music class in East Rome, first of September. A STARTLING REPORT That the Bell Memphis Has Sunk and Many Lives Lorst, Memphis,, Tean., July 29. —It is rumorsd here tenighi that the large ; and elegaut steamer Belle Mem phis, owned by the Ai chor Lin» Compan), was ’running between this city and St. Louis, sunk aboW sixty miles North of this city. Report has it further that forty or fifty lives were loaf. At thia h >ur it appears highly itniirobnhle that the rumor can be either confirm d or denied tonight as every reaouce haa been exhausted. There is do te'egraph line along the river, through a few telephone connections exist. O ie of these is with Osceola and another i« ly way of Dyersbuag, hut neither of them could he rained tonight. The only possibility lies iu the coming of some one from the boat to this city for relief, iu the event the accident occured, as was done in the case of the steamer Lady L«e a few weeks ago. The Lee went down only fourteen miles abov-- here. The Belle Memphis was due here tonight, and reached Uei o Soutl j bound at 4:30 o’clock yeet-rday afternoon. A feature of this rumor which gives it some force is that which states with aconracy the number of passengers aboard.
