CRUDE OIL Floating Down an Indiana Stream From Old Gas Wells. Anderson, Jntl., Sept., 2. —A great deal of alarm is being tcca sioned by a small creek in the northen part of this, the central part of the Indiana gas belt, filling with oil. The drought of the past IB weeks, unprecedented in the history of Indiana, has caused the creek to g > dry. Yesterday it was noticed that the oil was floating in a tiny Htn-am < o vn the course. It has increased •omewhat in volume during the past 24 hours, and has been traced to a sori' s of old gas well, which went dry some years ago, and were left standing. The oil is unrefined petroleum, and an assay is to be made as to the grade. Alarm has been occasioned by the fear that the oil would catch tire. It would be unmanageable in that case. The stream is being guarded to tie best <|f the ability of th -s* along it. The discovery showes the rapid progress with which the In diana gas belt is turning into ai. il field. The oil is, as a matter oi course, crude, and of inferior grade as it is the first from the wells HOG ANO HORSE *» • Fight a Battle Royal, and Both Die of Their Wounds- Wabash, Ind., September 2. — A esperate fight between a horse and a boar, which resulted in the dea'h of both animals, is reported from the country line, 18 miler North of this city. The animalsjwere on the farm of Arthur Eonson, and got together in a field, when the combat began. At the end of 20 minutes the horse was torn and bleeding, bad wounds being inflicted by the tusks of the angry hog. which was also in a dy ing condition, its head and legs b<- mg broken by the tremendous kicks administered by the horse. The animals survived the fight on ly a short time. EVERY JOINT n Legs And Arms Dislocated by a Lightening Stroke Noblesville, Ind., Sept 2. —Dur. ing a heavy rainstorm this evening lightening struck ’the farm resi dence of Solomon Hinshaw near this city Mrs. Hinshaw and Miss Lillian Stewart was seriously and perhaps fatally injured by the shock. Every joint in the a nis nnd lower limbs of the former were dislocated, while the latter wa-j frightfully burned about the body, her drees being set on fire by the electric fluid. Wage Scale Advanced. Pittsburg, Penn., Sept. 2 —The windowglass wage scale for the year beginning with September 1. was settled at a conference of manufac iirera and workmen here this afternoon by the manufactur ers conceding an advance over last year’s scale of 7| per cent. The se tlement, which is a compromise, utfects about *20,000 men. Drove Him Mad - Tipton, Ind., £e, t- 2.—Scott Magnett, a young farmer, was jailed here from Jefferson Town ship, where he had been fined for I as<au’t and battery. Although h ' is well to do, he refused to pay the fine. Shortly after being jailed he became violently insane, and is now a raving maniac. Clear for Silver Elkton, Ky., Sept. 2. —C. A. A Queen Thrown From her Horse and a King Nearly Drowned. Brussels, Sept. 2.—The Quean of Belgium, who has been staying st Spa, the famous Belgian wat-i --ing place, near Liege, has been thrown from her horse while jump ing a ditch,outside the town. Iler Majesty fell in the roadway and cut h‘-r head, which bled severely. She remounted, however, and re turned to Spa. Her Majesty is now confined to her bed, but her condi tion is not thought to be serious. Biarritz, Sept. 2. —King Alex ander, of Servia, nearly lost his life while bathing this morning in the Bay of Biscay. He went out swimming with an instructor in the uatatdrium, and beth master and pupil were carried off their feet and away from the shore by the strong current which prevails off this f»shi- nable watering place of France. The swimming master was drowned in spite of 'he efforts made to save him, and King Alex ander only reached the shore with the greatest difficulty. The Oldest Twins. Portland, Ind., Sept. 2. —On a farm near Geneva, 11 miles front this city, was today celebrated the nin-ty-first anniversary of the birth of John a”d Richard Mc- Griff, the oldest male twins in the United States —probably in th< world. Many of the relatives and friends of the twins from this and ether states were present, and had » good time. An old-fashioned din ner was enjoyed. vV H.
