The third national gymnastic competition to ba held in Rome, Itally, from the 15th to the 19th of September will be on a large scale. Besides sixty Italian societies more than fifteen hundred nativa gymnasts have subcribed their names already. Many gymnasts will come from Berlin by a special direct train, and an imposing num ber are expected from Switzerland and Belgium. In order to gain about 20 min utes’ time for its express trains the Great Western Railway of Eng land recently paid $500,000 for a hotel on the line at Swindon Junc tion. By an old agreement all trains were ordered to stop there for refreshments, and the hotel keepers refused to relinquish the privilege. Major-General Nelson A. Miles will receive of the army on the 29th of this month, when General John M. Schofield is retired on ac count <>f age. General Miles and Mrs. Miles are considered the handsomest couple in the army.
